Campervan Parking - on the Hill - CANCELLED

Just wondering does anyone know why the Campervan Parking facility on the hill @ Dunmore East is cancelled.

This seems like a crazy decision.

Yes there is a Camping / Caravanning facility at the GOLF Club - but it is overpriced and many campervan people do not want to be so far away from the action of the town itself.

This is another BAD decision by "Whoever" ?? and can only lead to pushing campervan people away from Dunmore East and depriving the town of much needed business in this time of recession.

Its time Ireland woke up to the fact that Campervanning is here to stay and start to provide facilities which are comparable to those in France and other EU countries where Campervans are welcomed and accepted as a good means of revenue for local hotels, pubs, restaurants and other attractions and amenities.

Surely this decision can be reconsidered and reversed ??

If you refer to the hill that is above the port, it is very disappointing to hear that news, as it was a great place to stay. I think what happens is that whoever has a caravan site in an area, that they put pressure on the local authorities to ban 'wild camping' in the mistaken belief that they will then get the business. I wouldn't bother going back to Dunmore East now, so all local business suffers and I will pass that news on to all other motorcaravan owners that I know - it's time that local chambers of commerce realise that there is a negative knock on effect totheir local economy with actions like this.

Does our tourism promoters not realise the huge market that there is available to them, if only they made motorcaravans more welcome and provided the free facilities like those available on the continent. There are over 200,000 motorcaravns in France alone and about 700,000 throughout Europe - what a market to tap in to, but why would they come to a country where motorcaravans are made so unwelcome by most local councils. I speak from vast experience - give me camping in France any day, where practically every town welcomes your business.

Only in Ireland would this happen we had 50 Campers / Motorhomes including French / Australian campers there at the weekend there was a survey done which showed the combined spend for the Weekend was More than 3000 euro in the Village and a collection which netted 250 euro to the RNLI. This is the situation most weekends during the Summer Months depending on the amount of campers that visit the village. The traders are livid that this happened, they will now lose out on the spend by the camper people because we will not be forced to use and pay for facility's we don't need. We will not use the campsite it is too far out of the village, so we will go elsewhere and take our business with us. PS .. The Barrier is now locked Closed so no point in going to Dunmore East for the Blue Grass Festival. No place to park. With sadness I say good bye to the Beautiful Village of Dunmore East.

Dunmore Easts loss will be somewhere else's gain. It's appealing the way leisure vehicle owners are treated in this Country. In every other Country in Europe they have Fantastic Facility's for Campers / Motorhomes to entice people to stay a night or two in their area. The local economy benefits the Local Council benefit from a Small Charge, in Ireland we have Height Barriers as a solution to the Traveler Problem this effects everyone so there is no provision for Camper / Motorhomes to stay in an area where money can be put into the local economy. In every other European Country they have introduced Laws which prevent Travellers from taking over and destroying Areas ( Eg Aires ). The Laws Are Rigidly Enforced With Stiff Penalties for offenders hence the problem no longer exists. The Aires are frequented by Visitors to the Area and those Touring across the Country. These people spend their Euro in the Local Economy while staying on the designated areas provided by the respective councils for Motorhomes / Camper-vans. The not so insignificant Spend by Campers / Motorhomes in Dunmore East every Weekend Will Now Be Lost To The Local Economy as The Campers Will Go Elsewhere Where They Are Welcome and Bring Their Spending Power With Them. A Sorry Day For All. One Mans Greed Hurts all the Other Traders Of A Beautiful Village. Welcome to Ireland, just don't bring your Leisure vehicle with you. Give us your money we will give you back nothing in return.

put quite plain and simple this is a disgrace.. Greed Greed and more Greed one one or two people's part. this will end up costing the local economy dearly. But its a sad state of affairs when all i can say is that i am not surprised. with any bit of luck the local community or business association will do something about this, but i hear through the grapevine that the person responsible is well "politically connected" so this may present a challenge. hopefully the greater good and common sense shall prevail and not the failed bureaucracy of this Republic.
