Travel to Koh Lipe in off season (late august/early sept)

Just wanting to know the easiest, quickest and relatively cheapest way to get to Koh Lipe from Georgetown in low season. I am 31 y/o female travelling solo on a backpacker budget. I read somewhere about needing to take the long way around in order to go through customs instead of the usual through Langkawi as that ferry doesn't operate in off season. If someone can give me the lowdown on the easiest way to get there would be great. I plan on travelling through Thailand after Koh Lipe Island.

It´s not possible for you to go to Lipe in 1 day if you don´t go by car.

Anyway, you have two options.

One way is to go by Langkawi Ferry from Georg Town to Kuah Jetty on Langkawi. The ferry dep 08.15 and arr Kuah 11.00.

From Kuah another ferry dep 13.00 and arr Tammalang Pier in Satun province 13.15 thai time. From Tammalang you take a taxi about 1 hour to Pak Barra Pier and stay there over night and take the first speedboat transfer next day 11.30 to Lipe with arr 13.00.

The other way is to go by car to Pak Barra.

In this case you go by car 2,5 hours to Wang Kelian border crossing (Workman Check Point). From the border it´s another 1,5 hours to Pak Barra. If you do this you must leave Penang early, at the latest 07.00 to be able to catch the speedboat. There are two departures from this low season, 11.30 and 12.30.

Hello,

An other possibility is to take the first morning minibus to Hat Yai, leaving Penang around 5am.

In Hat Yai, take a taxi to Pak Bara, then the speedboat to Lipe.

You can do that in one day easily, you arrive in Lipe around 2pm.

To book taxi and speedboat ticket, you can contact Cathay Tours in Hat Yai, they are very reliable and efficient.

Diveinkohlipe - Sorry I have a couple more questions for you if thats ok, any idea what the rough price will be for both the Bus to hat Yai and the taxi fare to Pak Barra? Or will it be a package price through Cathay Tours that gets me all the way to Lipe?

I have just been reading some of your other conversations about Koh Lipe and see you actually work over there (lucky you) and you recommend not to worry about booking accom. in advance. Does this same advice apply to me if I'll be travelling in Aug/Sept? I can just arrive and have a look around for somewhere to stay? Or do you think I need to pre book something? even just a first night?

Also, I don't have my dive certificate yet but want to get it so I can dive when I come over. Do you have dive schools so I can learn to dive over there or do I need to learn before I come to Lipe?

Sorry I have so many questions! Any help is much appreciated :)

Hello Jacqui H,

Thanks for your kind feedback.

I can't tell you the price for the trip from George town to Hat Yai, I can't remember how much I paid last time (it was something like 45RM?). The best for you is to go the the travel offices on the ground floor of the KOMTAR and check with them the exact schedules and prices. You can find different kind of buses and minibuses as well.

Cathay Tours will indicate you the price of their transfer from Hat Yai city to Pak Bara and then from Pak Bara to Lipe. During low season, they have special prices and it will be around 2100 baht for taxi+speedboat. You can contact them here : cathaytourthailand.com

As for diving :

If you can swim, no problem, you can enroll in a diving course.

If you can't swim nor float, you can't enroll in a diving course BUT you can do one or many Try-dives.

The first level of the diving course is done in 4 days : open water course. So you need to have long holidays for that. There are other possibilities we could offer you but this forum is not made for me to advertise my dive centre. The best would be for you to contact us by email this way I can explain everything in details.

If you want to go for try-dives, no worries, we can organize them any day.

For accommodation, you do not need to book anything in advance. There will be enough rooms on the island... except maybe if you come during Hari Raya.

Thats awesome, thanks for all your info and advice. I can definitely swim and float no problems so is it possible to contact you via your email? Where can I find it? I have no time restraint really so 4 days is not a problem Thanks :)

Hello! I am headed to koh lipe tomorrow night from koh tao and wondering what the best spot to stay is on sunset beach? I came to koh tao and it's much busier than I thought and lots of boats in the water making it muddy and not as nice as the Thailand I remember from 2003- so I'm thinking sunset beach on koh lipe will be much prettier. Do you think that's th best place for the prettiest beach? Thanks so much!

The best beach now is Sunrise Beach as it's facing east and protected from the southwest monsoon.

If you like to stay on Sunset anyway you have only 1 resort there, Porn Resort.

The weather is not nice right now. It's a lot of rain....

Thanks so much for getting back with me!! really appreciate it.

and Utttoh, that's what I was worried about. Is it Bad weather at sunrise too even though it's on the other side or is it different? Would you recommend us staying on the gulf or does somewhere like trang or further north like phi phi have better weather- or is it all the same right now? I just feel like it's much prettier on the adaman from my memories and want to show my husband what ive been talking about all these years! Unfortunately we are here during monsoon...
