Water and beach

We went to Brasilito today and the water had a strong and terrible odor, was brownish redish, and left what looked like thick soap suds all over. Is this normal? We are staying in Playa Hermosa, and it was fine. After quickly deciding that we were not staying in Brasilito or Playa Conchal, we went to Tamarindo, and it was fine too.

1. Re: Water and beach

I've seen several recent posts about this. I found an article online which says it's fairly common in the summertime (dry season): news.co.cr/tourism/…

It's a pretty serious situation and best to heed the warnings mentioned in the article.

Thanks--we figured that it was not a good thing from the smell, but there were people in the water.

This is known as the red tide, or marea roja. Usually the ocean can absorb the runoff from farms and untreated sewage, but sometimes the ecosystem gets overwhelmed, the ocean turns red from bacteria, and the smell is strong. It can happen at any beach , or sometimes to a whole stretch of coast. This year, 2012, has been a particularly bad one.
