we are in mue ni at the moment and saying $18 per night in a wonderful guest house Duc Thao across the road from the beach. lovely hosts and a peaceful garden setting.

it is at the bottom end of mue ni away from the main tourist strip.

Mui Ne has a number of guest houses across the road from the beach and along the road going into town, all in the range of VND 200,000 - 250,000 US$9-$13). Nam Chau Resort on the beach is not much more expensive.

If you stay in Ham Tien, rather than Mui Ne, the prices are a bit higher, more like in the range of VND 400,000 (US$18) for the same thing you get in Mui Ne for VND 250,000.

The whole area is Phan Thiet, not Mui Ne.

If you look on trip advisor, you will note that resorts in Ham Tien are listed as Ham Tien and resorts in Mui Ne are listed as Mui Ne. The people who live here know the difference, but tourists don't because some resorts and guest houses use the name Mui Ne for marketing purposes.

The incorrect designation of the area was begun by Lonely Planet in 1994 when we had a solar eclipse visible here and continued by other tour operators. As Phan Thiet covers some 60 kilometers of coastline with various wards and resorts all along the beach, it is important that people know where their resorts are located. They only know this if things are properly designated.

You could try Mui Ne Backpackers they have a new resort that caters for 6 bed dormitories to single rooms and the dorms will start around $8. This new resort opens in June. They do have a beachfront resort that also has budget rooms. These 2 are in the centre of all activities in Ham Tien. As it's low season you could just roll up providing it's not the weekend. Another good option would be to try Hiep Hoa, or Joes both beachfront and very good prices.

In general the cheaper places are between Ham Tien and Mui Ne, and on the opposite side of the road to the Beachfront.

I agree with Ross about the Hiep Hoa Resort. Where can you find a free standing bungalow with AC, TV, minibar etc... only a metre from the beach for $25.

Yes, it is one of my fave places in the world but probably the best value for money as well. IMO.
