Staying at Wyndam Rio Mar for 3 nights, are taxis available?

Hello,

We are staying at the Wyndam for 3 nights as a stop over on our way to another island. We have a rental vehicle reserved at the airport but are rethinking that choice because no one wants to drive.

Are taxis available at the resort as a mode of travel for off-resort dining?

Yes, there are taxies at the resort and the Enterprise car rental company if you change your mind and decide to rent a car. Apparently some restaurants will send a shuttle to pick you up at the resort if you dine with them. We negotiated with our taxi driver as he wanted $85.00 to take us into old San Juan from the resort but he agreed to $75 (each way). To get from the airport to the resort we hired Luquillo taxi (luquillotaxi@gmail.com) (Sean) and he did it return for $150 for the three of us. The costs do add up taking taxies but car rental is not cheap either. We're Canadian so because PR is not part of the continental U.S. our car insurance at home didn't give us collision, etc. so that would have really brought up the cost. Hope this helps

There is so much to see and do in the area that I strongly recommend you rent a car. You will have a completely different experience with a car. The east coast has the El Yunque Forest, the Biobay lagoon and the ferry to Vieques and Culebra Island, among its top attractions. Do not miss any of these, even if you stay for 3 days.

We cancelled the rental car and I am happy we did. Taxis worked well for our group as no one wanted the job of driving or navigating, we were looking for a stress-free trip. We used a transfer service to and from the airport. Our rainforest guide picked us up at the resort and drove us around after our hike so we could see local sites and have lunch. The bellman at the hotel arranged a taxi driver for our bio bay trip who waited for us while we did that excursion.

We likely spent more than if we had gotten a rental car but we wanted to relax and have a couple of drinks at lunch and dinner. The taxis were convenient.

We will be staying at the Wyndham Rio Mar for 4 nights and I see that a rental car is recommended. Is it possible to rent one after getting to the hotel, or is it necessary to get one at the airport? We leave here in 3 days. Someone mentioned renting from Charlie for $70.00. Is that someone in the town near the hotel?

Wyndham has an Enterprise car rental desk at their resort. I suggest booking early because when we were there they told us not to worry about putting a hold on one but then all the cars were reserved by the time we wanted to rent one.

Charlie's rental is a local company, and always gets good reviews. They have branches in Isla Verde and Condado. Take the shuttle from the airport.

You can reny from the airport or the hotel. But the taxi to the hotel from the airport is rather expensive, so your best bet is to rent in SJ and then drive to the resort.
