Visiting Gran Melia over New Year's Weekend - Advice

Hi! We're visiting Puerto Rico for the first time in a couple of weeks, and I would love (LOVE) all and any advice on the Gran Melia Resort and things we should do while there. We are renting a car at the resort so can take day trips, etc.

What are the 'don't-miss' attractions?

What are must-sees in Old San Juan?

Restaurant recommendations?

Temperatures/Weather?

Thanks so much!

That's a loaded question! But the Melia is BEAUTIFUL and they have daily activities like bingo and such for guests, they also offer great day-trip tours so call the Concierge and see if they'll email you a list of them so you can book in advance. See TA listings for food/stuff but definitely have a cafe con leche & majjorca at "La Bombanera" on Calle San Francisco and SIT AT THE COUNTER! It's where the AM flava is!!!

You'll be fairly close to El Yunque, which is definitely worth a visit. Take a hike to one of the waterfalls.

As mentioned El Yunque is very close, Luquillo beach and food kiosks, fajardo for the Biobay or evening cruise to Vieques for the Biobay there, Culebra island is a nice day trip

The Rainforest and Bio Bay is a must. You can check with Debby, she is a Tour Guide with a mini Van and combines these attractions 787-381-1340

renting car a must; take walk away insurance;GPS & PR maps not reliable.

check out this good web site: www.puertoricodaytrips.com also many attractions around PR are closed on Mon & Tues! so plan carefully.

must see: El Yunque ranger led tour $5. starts @ Palo Colorado Station. must see biobay: cost $48pp with Captain Suarez 787-655-2739 or 787-472-3128. 7pm; 9pm & 11pm or any biobay tour. make sure moon is not bright. captainsuarezbiobaypr@gmail.com. get directions from Gran Melia to Las Croabas Cement Dock on rd 987. note road there as you will be driving back @ night. Stop by Kiosks in Luquillo along side of freeway. very interesting place to eat and you have a great choice of PR food.

San Juan, public parking behind Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel. park and walk. check out free trolley-take to El Moro and walk down. King Tut exhibit behind Sheraton Old SJ. restaurants on La Fortaleza near Plaza Colon ok.

food in PR is average, bland, greasy. take ferry to Catano @ pier 2 cost .50 one way. Get cab to Bacardi Rum Distillery- 2 free drinks and free tour. spend day in Old SJ walking around. we drove around island and rode horses on beach in Isabela, but you can do this near Gran Melia. we also saw Camuy Caves & Acreibo Observatory which is not a must see. major roads are ok. traffic during rush hr in SJ is horrendous. avoid. tolls along roads; roads through center of PR very curvy and times we were told took much longer. I called it Puerto Rican time. PR's greates asset is it's friendly people. they are wonderful. have a great time. bbeerbower

Thank you all so much for the advice! We are definitely getting a rental car. Is it better to rent a car at the airport (and drive into Gran Melia around 11pm to check-in, as we will) or rent a car on-site at Gran Melia?

I think both have pros and cons. If we rent at airport, we avoid shuttle fees but we'll have to pay to park at Gran Melia. If we rent at Gran Melia, no parking fees but we'll have to pay for an airport shuttle.

Thoughts?
