A 'dog gate' between the tailgate and rear seats would be an obvious choice to allow it to move around.

It doesn't have to be in a crate but the smaller the dog is the easier it is to use a crate if you took that option.

Many dogs travel unrestrained on their owners knees (passenger and/or driver) in France but it isn't advised for Foreign visitors to do this unless you speak extremely good French.

We travel with our dog in an Ancol harness that clips into the rear seat belt. IT allows him full movement on the back seat and we have had no problems. We have been stopped by the gendarmes and they were satisfied with it.

Good luck
