Multi Country Car Rental

Hello.

Apologies if this has been asked before.

We are travelling from UK and are wanting to do a roadtrip in the US that will take us in and out of Canada. I have been told it is not possible for non US citizens to take a rental car out of the USA, meaning the only solution would be to hire a different hire vehicle for the Canadian portion.

Can anyone clarify if this is correct?

I think you have been misinformed. What you cannot do is rent a car from somewhere in the USA and drop it off anywhere in Canada, with a very, few, rare exceptions (in a very limited part od the eastern side near Niagara).

You can rent a car in the USA, drive across the border to Canada, return to the USA and return the car. However, mostly only the major, international rental companies allow this and will provide you with the insurance cover and correct documentation to do so.

When you book the car, you must tell the rental company or the third party broker that you plan to drive in Canada so you have the right paperwork - you may well be asked to show it as you cross the border in either direction.

If you need some info on the rental companies often recommended on this forum plus tips on renting in the USA, just ask here. Also, if you need help with your planned trip, itinerary wise, again we can try and help.

Hi.

Its rubbish, done it loads of times!

Most of the major rental companies, if not all allow cross border travel to Canada as long as you bring it back to the US. Cross border one-ways are another matter.

A Canadian cannot take a US registered rental car across the border, but not a problem for you. If your at all concerned as them to note it on the docs at pick up but the standard T&Cs cover it : ).

No chance of Mexico..........unless you find a local company near to the border maybe, perhaps one who wants you to carry an 'extra' package or two!

Hi mcmullanbrush;

Rental cars cross the US / Canada border hundreds of times each day, and your citizenship has nothing to do with it.

There are some car rental companies that will not permit their cars out of the state or out of the country, or charge a premium if they do. Most of the larger rental companies will allow cross border travel.

Ensure that the car rental company notes on the rental agreement that they authorize you to take the car into Canada. You may be asked by Customs when entering Canada, or when re-entering the US, for this documentation.

Some companies offer unlimited mileage, but only within the US. The rental company will use the onboard GPS to track your usage. The extra per mile charges can add up quickly, so be sure to ask in advance.

Best Regards

>> Is it the same for Mexico? <<

In addition to not being allowed, you'll find that some border towns have significant unrest. If you have several days in your itinerary to visit Mexico, ask on the local forum for tips about how to do this. For example, if you'll be traveling from San Diego and heading down to Rosarito or Ensenada, ask on the San Diego forum as well as the forums for those Mexican towns. But if you don't have several days for this visit, then focus more of your time on the US & Canada.

Thanks to everyone!

We are looking at a Great Lakes based trip and are planning to spend one of three weeks in Canada, so the car hire answer has made that much easier.

As for Mexico, we are also looking at three weeks in the South West of the US and were wondering about a week South of the border.
