road trip around usa

Hi. We are planning a trip by car starting Chicago - St Loius - Kansas, Dodge - Oklahoma - Memphis - Nashville - Chattanoogo - Smokies - Knoxville - back to Chicago. With several stop overs and a few detours to sights. We have 21 nights hoping to spend 3 of them back in Chicago at the end.

Does this sound to much? Weve studies the map and the miles and think it sounds ok. But would welcome views from experienced trippers.

Thanks

From Chicago to St Louis you can follow Route 66.

This website gives you ideas on what you can see and has sections on each state to click onto.

Kansas, as in Kansas City? There isn't much to see between those two places.

These website may help you.

There are countless place between Chicago and OKC for R66 worth stopping and a very short but interstesting part goes through KS. www.historic66.com In OKC never miss the Cowboy and Heritage Museum and the Memorial site. On your way to Memphis from OKC you can divert to Hot Springs NP and pay a visit Little Rock.

Week 1 for Chicago via St. Louis and Tulsa to OKC. Visit to OKC and drive to Memphis.

Week 2 for Memphis, Nashville en the Smokies.

Week 3: Get back to Chicago and a visit.

That sure can be done.

What are your interests? E.g., if history, check out the Lincoln Museum in Springfield, IL.

Thank you very much for your replies and tips we will certainly visit everything we can fit in. Interested in all american history Particularly interested in civil war and cowboys and indians. Would love to catch a rodeo, but on checking dates looks like we will miss them.

Can I also ask advice on car hire, we are arriving in Chicago from England and want to hire a car. Lots of sites but not sure which are good, reliable and dont cost a fortune. Are they all much the same? Any tips on hiring would be helpful and gratefully received.

Thanks all

I can help with the car hire question. Have a read of this topic, link to follow.

Even if you don't bother with the companies mentioned in the topic, always use the UK based website or a .co.uk or other European or foreign company so you get comprehensive prices, including all the necessary insurances. The American websites tend to give net prices, the full price can often be more than twice the starting price!!!

Have a great trip,

SWT

Check later this year the arenas in the major cities you're visiting. You might get lucky and be able to catch an arena rodeo event somewhere.

From Memphis, consider taking route 64 west in order to visit Shiloh National Military Park then catching the Natchez Trace Parkway into Nashville. Shiloh was a wake-up call to the nation of the horrible ordeal at hand as it was the costliest battle in American history at the time.

Chattanooga also features two great Civil War battle sites.

Have you ever read the "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson, a Pulitzer Prize winner and arguably the best one volume history ever of the Civil War? It's part of the Oxford History of the United States and IMO a surprisingly easy read, especially once the reader gets into the war years. It would help provide perspective to the great battles that took place in Tennessee.

On your trip back to Chicago, consider visiting Dayton, home of the spectacular U.S. Air Force National Museum, the largest aircraft museum in the world. Also you can see the Wright Flyer III, the first airplane capable of controlled and reliably sustained flight. After Kitty Hawk, the Wright Brothers repeatedly risked their lives and displayed their genius in perfecting powered flight. Visiting Huffman Prairie Flying Field, part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, you can stand where in 1905 man first conquered the skies and legendary fathers of flight, including Hap Arnold, learned to fly at the world's first airfield.

I know what you mean but "cowboys and indians" is not what many people think it is. Indians are residents of India and are called Native Americans in the USA. And most cowboys couldn't afford a gun and were gunless most of the time. And many Native Americans used to live in houses and not in tipis.
