Roadtrip From Los Angeles to New Orleans

Me and my boyfriend are currently planning our first roadtrip to the usa. After much deliberation we have decided to go from los angeles to new orleans. Putting this into googlemaps, the easiest route starts los angeles, california, then goes through arizona, new mexico, texas and finishes off in louisiana. We are going for a minimum of 3 weeks, if we can we will push it to 4. We are both finding it really hard to plan the route to see the best sites, we like a lot of the weird roadside type attractions but also want to take in some national parks and historical sites. We have already done a lot of research but would really appreciate any suggestions/hints/tips for the best scenic roads to travel on and sites to see. The main road is the 1-10 but we want the trip to be as scenic as possible and this is where we fall short on our knowledge of the roads.

opinions on our trip are greatly appreciated

Thank you!

Katie

Also we are trying to work out the best time of year to travel, as we are going through the south, we realise it will be very hot but what is the best time to go so it's not too unbearable?

Hi

Great roadtrip. Best time of year to is end of september/october imo. Most of the unbearable heat has gone and humidity in Tx and La is lower. Also no schoolholidays that time of year except for Columbus Day. (afa I know)

Are you aware that drop off charges for the rental car are involved? Can add $ 250,-- to $ 500,-- to your trip.

I'll try to give you are route but there are many more options:

1. Los Angeles.

2. Las Vegas

3. Grand Canyon NP.

4. Sedona

5. Phoenix-Tucson

6. Tombstone-Bisbee-Silver City

7. To White Sands NM and Carlsbad Caverns NP

8. Via Davis Mountains to Big Bend National Park.

9. Big Bend to San Antonio via the byways.

10. San Antonio and Austin.

11. Via Houston to Nola.

12. Leave from Nola.

For weird roadside attractions you can check www.roadsideamerica.com

This is not a day by day post. We can give you lots of details for this trip but please first decide if you want to do this.

Thanks for all the information it is very appreciated. Have listed your route tips and will do some research into them. We were going to leave las vegas out but we did want to do grand canyon so should maybe do a visit to las vegas as well. Have not really researched fully into rental cars yet, we did realise there is a drop off charge though hadn't realised it was so high!

We have been planning a lot of our trip around the roadsideamerica site already, we love it, sadly a lot of the attractions seem to have closed down though which is a shame.

There are many attractions left. Maybe Las Vegas is the biggest one ;) Dont miss Las Vegas if you have never been before. 2 nights often is enough.

You would want to make reservations for Grand Canyon NP. www.grandcanyonlodges.com For the rest of this trip I would wing it except for Big Bend NP if you want to go there. It's not one of the most famous NP's but its fantastic. Only one lodge in this NP. http://www.chisosmountainslodge.com/

The western part of Tx is too often overlooked.
