Help with Itinerary/lodging in Washington State in July 2017

We are taking a month long road trip in July 2017 with 3 kids, ages 4, 8 and 10. We are doing a mix of camping and cabins/hotels. We are trying to figure out our lodging and itinerary for Washington and Olympic National Park and having a difficult time narrowing it down!

Looking for advice on must do's and lodging or camping for the 3rd week of July 19-23, 4 nights. Current plan is to drive from Coeur d'Alene to Friday Harbor. We are meeting another family with kids whose parents live in Friday Harbor and plan to camp for 2 nights on their property, having 1 full day on the Island. Our plan was to then travel to somewhere near/in ONP to see sights there for 2 nights. We've found some cabin rentals in Fork and Lake Sutherland, but it's difficult to find a cabin for just 2 nights. We are also open to camping in ONP. Or possibly skipping ONP all together and just exploring another island? Although we would really love to see ONP. Or Victoria Island could be an option? We could also skip Friday Harbor and stay 4 nights somewhere else. After Washington we plan to drive to Oregon Coast, Depoe Bay on July 23.

If it helps, other stops on our trip are SLC, Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, and Glacier NP. We live in Southern CA.

Thanks for any advice!

You need more time gor vancover island.

If I'm reading this correctly you have 2 open nights....

Day 1 ferry yo anacortes, explore fidalgo and whidby island, feery to port townsend, camp 1 night near Sequim/port angeles at KOA.

Day 2 ser hurricane ridge then evening/sunset rialto beach. You could camp/cabin at second beach on the queilleutte reservstion.

Day 3 see hoh rain gorest, afternoon ser quinault, night in Aberdeen before heading down to oregon.

Rialto Beach at ONP is beautiful with low tide.

However, you need be careful with quick high tide, strong wind and strong current.

We walked from the parking lot to Hole-In-The-Wall at Rialto Beach in June years ago. We had to walk back quickly because of high tide.

Lodging/camping at 3 different spots in Olympic is needed and fills up in summer months. Check ferry schedules also.

Oregon coast a lot of time lodging has a 2 night minimum in summer.

I'd look at something like this:

Ferry to Friday Harbor for your stay with friends. Following the visit, take the morning (WA State) ferry from Friday Harbor to Sidney BC (on Vancouver Island) and spend the day in Victoria. Take the last (Coho) ferry of the day from Victoria to Port Angeles and overnight (motel) in PA.

Visit Hurricane Ridge the next morning, then drive west to Rialto Beach (near La Push) to explore the tide pools etc., and spend the night in Forks (another motel).

Next morning, visit the Hoh rain forest (walk the Hall of Mosses trail) then head south on US 101. For a fairly short day, you can overnight around Ocean Shores or Aberdeen/Hoquiam. There are nice kid-friendly beaches at Ocean Shores; Hoquiam and Aberdeen aren't going to win any beauty contests but are okay for the night.

Or if you don't mind a couple more hours in the car, continue south to Long Beach or Ilwaco (WA) or cross the bridge to Astoria. I'd recommend visiting Cape Disappointment if at all possible - great scenery plus a terrific Lewis and Clark interpretive center that might be good for the kids.

Look at staying in Lake Quinault for your southern ONP exploration; preferably in a cabin next to the rainforest.

Have you posted on the WA state forum? There are at least two very knowledgeable and helpful ONP experts there.

I second the Rialto Beach recommendation especially for sunset.
