Vietnam Honeymoon

Dear Advisors, have any of you been to Vietnam? My fiancé and I are looking into going for our honeymoon for a fortnight, quite possibly in June 2013.

Realistically we are only going to have time to see a few places if we're not going to spend the whole trip on the move.

Any tips for a two week schedule with a mixture of town and countryside? We have never been to Asia so don't be afraid to recommend the obvious sights.

Thanks! Hugh and Sarah X

Congratulations. Sure you don't want to honeymoon in Bali instead? It's just 1-2 more flights farther south and much more suited for beautiful scenery and they are long-established for tourists. Vietnam is a newer scene and many of their tourist areas lack the basics like an acceptable bathroom. One tour bus stop bathroom had it next to an open area where they kept chickens; and there's lots of bird flu in Vietnam.

That being said, consider looking at Exotissimo for tour options. The're expensive but you can see that for 2 weeks people go north-middle-south (or vice versa). Fly to Hanoi via Bangkok and book at Nikko Hotel and stay 1-2 nights to see the Old Quarter in the evening and the many wonderful museums. Then go by shuttle van to one of the top two overnight boats to Halong Bay (Emeraude or Indochina Sails). That is beautiful. If on your honeymoon; I'd recommend at least 2 nights at around $280+/night. Then fly down to Danang Airport and have a car to take you to either a beach resort in Danang or straight to the little town of Hoi An. A multitude of medium-sized resorts to choose from. Stay a couple nights. Then drive back to Hue or Danang airports and fly to the big city of Ho Chi Minh City. If you can afford it - stay at the Park Hyatt hotel for $350-500/night. Very nice for your honeymoon. If not, other hotels might be the Rex hotel or the Sofitel. I think there might be a new Nikko near Ben Thanh Market. You could either join a SinghTourist backpacker bus trip (quite good) or splurge and get a hotel limo/guide for a couple hundred/day and take half-day trips to see old Chinese temples, eat Chinese food - or the few local shopping malls. Souvenir shops. Or day -trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong River.

Don't forget that April is hot/humid. January is perfect low-season, non-rainy season, and easier to catch flights and rooms. Enjoy.
