Travel insurance covering cost of prescriptions (Caremed?)

I'm travelling overseas for a year and have pre-existing medical conditions (primarily asthma). I'm looking for fully comprehensive insurance that will cover all the normal stuff (theft, delays etc) and medical stuff. This should include obtaining a prescription and having it filled.

The only one I've found that provides that level of medical cover is Caremed. However, reviews outside of their website are few and far between. Furthermore their cover of the normal stuff seems a bit sub par. I'm looking for cover more on the level of World Nomad. So - has anybody used Caremed or used an insurer that will cover these costs?

Hi

Insurance generally means to insure against the unexpected, but you are looking for assurance.

If you are from the UK with asthma then you must be on repeat prescriptions, couldn't you arrange for these prescriptions to be fulfilled and your medications shipped out to you by a member of your family, then find an insurance which will cover you for an unexpected hospital stay because of your asthma.

The other thing you can do is contact an asthma society and get advice from other travellers with the same problem as you.

Good luck

Hello,

I've been a Consultant in Emergency Travel Medicine, for a number of insurers, UK charities and NGO's, for many years.

During that time, I've read literally hundreds of Travel Insurance policies, and I can honestly say that I have never seen a policy which covers a UK citizen for the cost of replenishing their routine scripts whilst they are outside the UK.

If I misunderstand your enquiry, please let me know, but please understand that I cannot recommend any particular company, because that would be unethical, and I value my clinical and professional independence!

Kind regards

I also believe it will be very difficult to find travel insurance that provides coverage for a medication you regularly take for a chronic condition. Travel insurance is for catastrophic events rather than the treatment of known chronic ailments. Many policies may even have exclusions that permit them to deny coverage for health issues that are caused by a known and chronic condition.

I take several medications on a daily basis. I generally make arrangements with my insurance company to obtain the amount of medication I will need for the length of my stay. Failing that I have a family member pick up the medication and mail it to me. This is occasionally more difficult depending on how difficult it is to mail packages into the country where I am.

That's great advice everyone - thanks for the information! No experiences with Caremed I guess? Seems to be common theme online.
