Hotel Booking Sites

I would like to make all travellers aware if using a hotel booking site use one in your own country. I live in Australia and recently booked via a UK site and had to pay at the time of booking on Visa. My bank charged a conversion fee and it ended up I would have got the hotel for a better price through an Australian booking site.

I agree. In the US, you might pay a conversion fee and a transaction charge, both from your bank. The transaction charge is often 3% of the bill.

That's the case for any transactions made in foreign currencies with most cards. Has nothing to do with hotel bookings in particular.
