Silversea Cruise lines

We have booked a Silversea Cruise from Lisbon to Barcelona. next year. My husband and I travel quite a bit. We think the price is quite high per day for this cruise line. Do you think the cruise line is worth the money?

Absolutely. This is luxury cruising, with so much included. While some may debate the merits of Silversea versus Crystal versus Seabourn versus Regent (or other luxury line), once you graduate to this level of cruising, it's hard to go back.

I'm guessing you're booked for SilverWind September 22, 2008:

Mon Sep 22 Lisbon, Portugal 10:00pm

Tue Sep 23 Portimao, Portugal 8:00am 7:00pm

Wed Sep 24 Cadiz, Spain 7:00am 10:00pm

Thu Sep 25 Malaga, Spain 8:00am 11:00pm

Fri Sep 26 At Sea

Sat Sep 27 Ibiza, Spain 8:00am 11:00pm

Sun Sep 28 Valencia, Spain 8:00am 7:00pm

Mon Sep 29 Barcelona, Spain 8:00am

If you can afford the price of this cruise, you won't be disappointed. On the other hand, it will be difficult or impossible for the 2 of you to settle for less on future cruises!

2. Re: Silversea Cruise lines

i just returned from my first and likely last silversea cruise.

i was on the silver wind and the balcony stateroom was nice, but the food was rather mediocre if not bad (except in the relais & chateau restaurant for which you have to pay extra).

the worst was the service, or better said, the lack of it... frequently i was made to feel like a nuisance and not like a guest on board, which is rather depressing when you are paying almost 1000$ a day according to the list prices (which of course gets some kind of discounts).

i was told, that the ship will undergo a major overhaul with several months in dry dock, but i am not certain if this will improve the service or food and do also not know, if this is before or after your cruise.

bon courage!

3. Re: Silversea Cruise lines

I am surprised by the last review on Silversea.

We had the totally opposite experience.

Here is my review:

My husband and I were on Silver Wind ten years ago and had the trip of our lifetime.

I never thought it could be repeated again. But it was!

Another trip of a lifetime on Silversea!

We were on a 9 day cruise – June 6-15 to Greek Islands, Sicily and Italy. (2007)

Of course the ports were wonderful, but I am not going to review the ports since everyone chooses an itinerary based on their own preferences. My objective is to discuss our experience on Silversea.

From the moment we boarded the ship- The service was incredible!! Every staff person always greeted us and had a big smile on their faces.

Woke up very early every morning (we couldn’t wait to start our day on Silver Whisper) - and ordered cappuccino delivered to our rooms. Ten minutes later it would arrive and placed on our balcony with fine linens and china. 24 hour room service- you can order anything to eat or drink. Ordered drinks at 2:00 a.m. and same efficient and quick service.

Then we would go to La Terrazza for buffet breakfast when it opened. Huge wonderful assortment of breakfast items, juices, fresh omelet station, fresh fruit station with staff cutting the fruit. etc. – Glasses for juices were chilled.

The attention to this kind of detail was evident in everything they did on the ship.

Then you could have pancakes, waffles etc., prepared for you.

I am not a breakfast eater- so ordered Lamb Chops, with wild mushrooms and ice tea every morning. (Asked for fresh pineapple slice in my ice tea).

By the second day, the waiters knew me and would say – “Are you ready for your Lamb Chops and your Ice tea with fresh pineapple”.

10-15 minutes later the Lamb Chops arrived.

The point I am trying to get across is whatever special request you may want- the answer is always “YES”!

The waiters would carry your plates to your table from the buffet. All the waiters had wonderful attitudes and were there to please you in every way. You are made to feel very special!

We had a veranda suite which included a balcony. We loved having the balcony and used it all the time. The room is lovely, with plenty of closet space and more drawers than you can fill up- and we had 4 pieces of luggage. Personalized stationary with your name on it. Fresh flowers in your cabin. The bathrooms were fantastic! - double sinks, shower and tub with Bulgari amenities- soap, shampoo, conditioner etc.

Very comfortable bed with fine linens and duvet cover.

The stewardess was fantastic. Always smiling and calling us by our names. Good morning Mr. and Mrs.…... The stewardess’s- work in teams with 2 people taking care of your suite. The cabins are cleaned twice a day and the cleaning was immaculate.

They even lined up my makeup in a straight row!

We kept saying to ourselves, this service is UNBELIEVABLE!!!

We had to keep asking ourselves how anything can be so perfect like this.

We ate dinner every night in the main dining room and also ate once in the Italian Restaurant.

The food was excellent. Many choices and if you don’t see what you like on the menu- they will bring you what you request. One day I saw an appetizer from lunch that looked interesting and requested it for dinner. Nothing was ever a problem!

The dining room wait staff was so professional, great attitudes and impeccable service.

We were greeted by the waiter and wine steward the minute you sat down.

Every night it was like eating in a fine restaurant. Presentation of the food on the plates was always beautifully done. The beef dishes were extraordinary- beef melted in our mouths!

You will be pampered beyond belief!!

Most nights we would stay in the dining room for 3 hours talking to our fellow guests we were dining with at our table.

We enjoyed the formal nights as it made for a Glamorous Evening!

Chef David was accessible to all the guests. Coming out to the dining room, greeting everyone and making sure you were happy. One day my husband told the chef- he may prefer something different instead of a filet of fish. The chef said call me and let me know- he said “do you want a whole fish- I can make it anyway you want”.

Almost on every port before we were ready to sail- there would be a lovely small buffet set up by the pool area before dinner. Chef David was always walking around – getting to know all the guests.

One night we had a “Barbeque Dinner” on the pool deck. It was FANTASTIC! Forty desserts to choose from- I counted! The pool deck was set up with fabric covered chairs, linen tablecloths. Great entertainment and dancing to the wee hours. We were talking to a few couples and the Captain came by our table and talk to us for one hour! That is what made our cruise so special- all the staff treated you like family!

Every cruise they do an open Kitchen Galley Buffet Lunch. What a magnificent presentation!

So interesting to see how the kitchen functions.

See pictures of Kitchen Galley Lunch, Barbeque Dinner Buffet on Pool Deck and Breakfast Buffet:

At the bars they use linen napkins- another attention to fine detail! All the bartenders made great drinks!

I like Pina Coladas and had it prepared in Hawaii with vanilla ice cream. I told the bartender and with in a few minutes they went down to the kitchen galley and got the ice cream. No request is denied!

When we disembarked at the ports they had cold bottled water to take ashore and on the way back waiting for the tenders to return to the ship –at the ports they had cold punch, water and chilled towels!

What makes Silversea cruises so special are the fellow passengers you meet.

We met wonderful, fascinating people from all over the world. Everyone was so friendly and wanted to socialize. We have made some lasting friendships that we will keep in touch with.

If you want wonderful service, great food, and a smaller ship than there is only one Cruise Line- SILVERSEA!

The advantage of the smaller ship is that it is easier to make friends since you run into the same people all the time and the staff members get to know you personally.

Ron our cruise director was so friendly, and eloquent making

announcements and always had a big smile when he greeted us.

The entertainment was classy, A Broadway singer, a famous pianist etc.

On the third day the Cruise Hotel Director delivered to all cabins a sheet

asking if there is anything that he can do to make your cruise more pleasant please let him know.

I wrote back on the sheet: “HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE PERFECTION” And I meant it. There is nothing that I would add or change.

Spoke to many fellow passengers the last day of the cruise and everyone had the same opinion saying it was FABULOUS!

If you like Four Seasons hotels than you will love Silversea!

In fact I think Silversea is a cut above Four Seasons Hotels if you compare everything.

Silversea is a CLASS ACT! You will not be disappointed. In fact it will probably be one of the highlights of your life!!

You will be blown away with the Perfection in everything they do to make your cruise a memorable experience.

Silversea is expensive, but worth every dollar you pay.

We loved an all inclusive cruise- never have to sign for anything. Everything is included.

We kept asking ourselves, how can a cruise line deliver such a perfect product down to every last detail.

We travel all over the world for our business and have stayed in the finest hotels- and the Cruise we just went on with Silversea in all around service, food, attention to detail, and staff is top on our list.

To be honest it was hard to go back to reality when the cruise ended as this cruise was a Fantasy come true!

Our experience on Silversea was beyond our wildest dreams!

If you want the best service, great food, a wonderful cruise experience than Silversea is for you!

The question of whether it is worth the money or not is a matter of personal taste. It's a shame that gig11 had a bad time as Silversea pride themselves on the service, and the ratio of crew to passengers means there is always someone to fawn over you and take care of your every need - which they generally do. Not everyone will agree of course, but that is the case in anything. Silversea have a large die-hard following that refuse to sail with anyone else, and they are suitably rich enough to have tried every other high-end cruise line - some of these folk spend months of the year onboard, how super if you could afford! Granted, the Wind & Cloud are the eldest and could do with a bit of refurbing to bring them in line with the other two. A star was lost, but a cruise with Silversea is still one of luxury - so some of my in-laws tell me, they are also financially able to have tried everything else and they love it! You should have a very enjoyable cruise.

We have been of two Silversea cruises and our experience is that it is worth the money. Service, accomendation and food are superb. Whether the cruise is worth the money is another question. Our experience when considering the price with what you get is that it is wise to check out the ports the ship are visiting in detail. Because we evaluate the price we pay with the total package ie harbours, excursions etc. The first cruise we did was from Rome to Barcelona with Silver Whisperer and the overall experience was wonderful and beyond expectations. The second one was with Silver Cloud from Dubai to Dubai. THe ports we visited was a big disappointment with two/three exeptions. We did dock in huge container harbours with lots of cranes and noise. We were disapointed with Silver Sea´s choosing of harbours. So the total experience was below our expectations, but we have no complaints about the running of the ship. But ee did expect that SilverSea to deliver a total package of good experience, and the Dubai to Dubai did not fulfill our expectations. We will not recommend this cruise to anyone.

I must agree with EVERYTHING said by Sally6. My husband and I just returned from a Baltic cruise on Silver Cloud and our experience was beyond all expectations.

Sally6 said it well and the only thing I can add that we found a plus was the fact that there were no children on board. Our children are grown so we're not used to having children around. When we dine at one of the fine restaurants in our home city, having children talking in raised voices, constantly being reprimanded by their parents makes me nervous and takes away from the enjoyment of my night out. None of that on Silversea.

We are telling all of our friends what a fantastic cruise we had and we can only dream that we have the opportunity to do it again.

You will not be disappointed.

Just off the Silver Shadow -- another incredible experience on Silversea. If you're worried about the expense, it pays to find a cruise destination that is discounted -- but it really is worth every penny.

Silversea must be a great place to work because the staff is so exceptional and professional. And the food! Incredible. All of the included wines were terrific, too ... much better than we drink at home.

We ended up eating in Le Champagne three nights -- that's an amazing experience. We've traveled and dined all over the world -- and this was probably the best dining experience we've ever had. There is a small charge associated ($30 per person) and you can select your wines -- also a charge but reasonable if you want it to be -- but I estimate this meal would cost at least $250 USD per person if purchased in a fine restaturant. That said, the other restaurants on the ship are wonderful, too.

We left from Ft. Lauderdale this time -- it was different from a previous European cruise we went on with Silversea because of the advanced age of many of the passengers. A fairly large percentage were in their late 70s/80s (some in their 90s!) with walkers, etc. We still had fun -- but the last cruise had more folks our age (50s)...and we made some great friends.

You are lucky, lucky, lucky to be headed out on Silversea. I can't say enough wonderful things about it!

8. Re: Silversea Cruise lines

I've just come off the 15 night Silver Whisper Auckland to Sydney Cruise and I have never been so dissapointed in my life. From the very begining we were left to blunder our way around trying to find out where to go and what to do (our first cruise with silverseas and on their ships) to the dead flowers and the total lack of availlable staff to assist with my elderly aunt, which in Hobart led to the loss of a wheelchair off the side of the dock - fortunately without my Aunt in it.

At NO time did after the numerous mishaps, oversights and blunders were we EVER apologised to. In fact, with the wheelchair incident - which occured because no staff were available to either get the wheelchair or assist with getting my aunt back on board - if another staff member told me not to feel bad about the loss of the wheelchair I think I would have really lost it. There was NEVER an apology for the lack of assistance or the fact that the wheelchair had brakes that were broken which would otherwise have prevented it blowing away in the wind!

The various incidents ranged from the butler - who did not introducing himself until day 2 of the cruise after we had had to ask numerous people for assistance - not knowing what to do; to my acceptance to a dinner on the Captain's table being cancelled because my Aunt declined and me being left standing in the middle of the dinning room while they decided if they could still make room or not (despite me asking for it to be let go on finding out the situation) - no apology though.

The service staff would do their very best to provide service, however in many cases they just aren't being given the training. Food was good to average, hampered by the fact that no fresh supplies of anything were taken on board at all during the 15 days - they didn't have any fresh flowers after the first seven days and by day ten they had run out of peppermint tea ( a bug bear of a fellow passenger). Twice I had to send back room service meals as they were inedible. Items were billed to my account rather than my Aunt's despite several explicit instructions to the contrary.

As per my feedback to Silverseas, it was more like a three to four star cruise - certainly nothing like what one expects of a six star cruise or hotel. I'm still waiting for any response.

Yours sincerely,

Kate Brooks

We were also on the Silver Whisper from Auckland to Sydney. This was our first time on Silverseas but have been on over 20 cruises.

I will give the positive things first: The rooms were large with walk in closets and large bathrooms with shower seperate from the tub plus two sinks. The fridge would be stocked with what ever you requested, wine, beer, soda, etc. All of the staff was exceptional at all times. They would serve items that were not even on the menu if you requested it. No area was ever crowded even though the ship was almost full. At the sit down breakfast there was seldom more than 4 tables occupied. The excursion desk was always available and never busy. The pool side had a great menu not just burgers. The fellow travellers were elderly but quite active and super nice, never upity. The wines were great. Casino small but they had a $5 blackjack table. Never a line to get off or do anything. No stupid art auctions. No PA anouncements in your room.

The negative things: horrible coffee and they spent more time giving the food fancy names rather than taste. (We have travelled the world and love good food.) The towels are like commercial carpeting. This was promoted as a golf cruise. The golf arrangements are made by an outside company and they sent a guy named Bruce. He was arrogant, unorganized, and completely incompitent.

We found Oceana to be much better. They don't inlcude the drinks but the price difference is big.

We too are great fans of Silversea, and love Silver Whisper. We are currently looking at booking a Baltic cruise with them, and was pleased to read the review of last year's baltic cruise on Silver Shadow. I would just like to mention though, that Silversea have started taking children, the children on board for our cruise last year, were extremely well behaved, but, if there were more, in number, I really think the ship is too small to allow them space. We were glad that the table tennis table was not set up outside of our room!, also when they run around on the upper deck it is very noisy. I think the addition of children could be a mistake for Silversea, simply due to the small size of the ships, and that like your other reviewer we are just beyond that stage, and value the peace and quiet.

I was
