Question re Duty Free

I'm travelling via Dubai with RBA next week Heathrow to Melbourne. I want to bring 200 duty free cigarettes back when I return to the UK.

I don't want to take the chance of leaving my purchase until the return journey in case of delay at Dubai and perhaps not having enough time to get to the shop.

Does anybody know whether I can buy them on the outward journey (if I can get to the shop then) take them through Customs in Melbourne and then bring them back out with me?

Just put them into your hold luggage for the return trip.

Problem with that plan is that the duty free allowance into Australia is 50 cigarettes. So if you come with 200 and get caught it will become very expensive cigarettes indeed.

Only 50! Oh my word - and I thought 200 was a bit mean.!

Just have to hope I get to the shop on the way back.

Thanks for the warning.

After arriving back at LHR you can purchase duty free just prior to walking through the green or reds channels

Thank you - suspect they'll be dearer, but at least I know I can get some.

If your flight is after 10pm arriving back in the UK not sure the duty frees are open. I know Gatwick's was shut at 11.30pm when we flew back last year.

There is a World Duty Free in T4 Arrivals (which is the terminal for RBA) that is open from 04.45 to 22.00 which you could use as the flight from Dubai will land between these hours.

Unless something has changed in the laws of duty free, you are expected to consume alcohol or tobacco while you are out of the country. Bringing them back in you would be subject to duty.

Now, the question is whether and how they enforce that, but still....
