You have to pay for it. Info is on DL's webpage:

There's no magic !

You can pay for an upgrade or use mileage points to get one.

You cannot call and ask for one!

"How can I get a seat upgrade? it's an 8 hour flight!!!" - Obviously it's an 8 hour flight for everybody, if your question was about a free seat upgrade that's not going to happen - others have set out details of how to pay to upgrade your seat.

I live in MSP and have done that flight 10 times in the last 7 years. This last time we bought Economy Comfort seats and thought it made a BIG difference. (The entertainment system didn't work well, but that's another story...) At least the jet lag and leg discomfort were greatly reduced for us. EC costs about $100 per seat on that trip. Call Delta, and see if they still have EC seats available. Or just go to delta dot com and upgrade yourself. It's easy to do.

Geez, you don't have to be nasty. I KNOW that and I did pay for it. I was hoping to use sky miles to upgrade.

Sharon -- it always helps to provide more details so that people can be more specific with their answers. Just as you have now said you have miles, you can call delta and tell them what you want -- you want to check for an upgrade using your miles. That would be the way to do it.

Then maybe you should have asked the question, how do I upgrade using my air miles.

Have a great trip to Amsterdam

On Delta international flights you can only upgrade with miles if your coach ticket is a Y, B or M fare. These are the most expensive coach fares and there still has to be upgrade inventory available.
