Amsterdam to NZ, with stopover in South East Asia

I need to get from Amsterdam to Auckland in late september/return early october (3weeks away) but i would like stop over in South East Asia for approx. a week to meet friends.

I was thinking of Vietnam or thailand but it seems a bit tricky/expensive, with stopovers involved to book.

Has anyone done this type of trip before?

Are there any suggestions of airlines that allow week stopovers in their flights at no extra cost etc?

Also, any recommendations on where to go in SEA for 5 days?

Obviously trying to do this the most economical way...

Any response would be hugely appreciated.

Many airlines allow a multi-stop itinerary where you select the various destinations and length of time in each. If you are only flying one way those flights are often as expensive or sometimes more expensive than return fares. For trips Down Under from Europe, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong are all popular stop over destinations and are all serviced by most international carriers.Use Kayak at http://www.kayak.com/flights to search for multi-city flights.

You can book a multi city ticket with most airlines or it might be worthwhile looking into 2 separate tickets and breaking up the return journey somewhere too. That's a lot of flying in three weeks. Even Bangkok to Auckland is about 15 hours via SYD.

Thailand is great and fairly cheap to visit/stay. You would need to take an internal flight to Phuket or Ko Samui though or a taxi to Pattaya

Emirates can take you all the way, they have 3 flights a day into Auckland and also daily into Christchurch if that is any help, you can stopover in perhaps Thailand would be ideal

I didn't think Emirates fly direct to NZ from BKK do they? From Dubai yes but not from Bangkok. Perhaps you know better though. On the Emirates site they indicate flying via SYD and that's on a Qantas codeshare.

Singapore Airlines is one of my favorites but normally much more expensive than the others mentioned.

Check the "local" airline for stopover deals - Air Vietnam for Vietnam, Thai for Thailand.
