Is anyone else sick of the shrinking Southwest leg room

The Southwest planes are now so crowded I refuse to fly them unless there is absolutely no other option. The Jet Blue extra leg room seats are the best deal in the air today.

I flew them for the first time DFW to Key West. Well it is a pretty short hop so I didn't really notice. We stopped to drop off & pickup folks in NOLA- but my husband and I got a row to ourselves as it wasn't full. It is the most inexpensive airline I've used in the US. Certainly would not want to go 6 hours or more on it with the 3 seats each side configuration and with no economy plus or business though.

If you're flying from Boston, aren't there a lot of other options??

What did I miss? Did the seats suddenly get smaller? Did they add in more rows of seats to lessen pitch?

Hi,

Here's a link to a WSJ article that speaks to the OP's claims..

WSJ:

…wsj.com/middleseat/…

Note that the article addresses both "leg room" as well as recline rates.

.. and a more recent short note from a SF-area paper:

I fly from Charlotte NC several times a year on SW. I usually check in early enough to get an aisle seat ....so I can stretch out a bit in aisle if needed. It's never been an issue for me.......But for me SW is a luxury ...as I have traveled from South Carolina to Vegas and back several times on A Greyhound......

I also wonder how close the new seating will be to recommendations (probably now obsolete given the increase in the size of people nowadays.)

I was reading the full report on this the other day and wonder how much has changed from 2001 to today.

As the link from GOPBI mentions many airlines are installing new seating to lessen weight and add and extra row.

So with Southwest they reduce the pitch from 32 to 31 which is the same as a Qantas 737 and others.

It's not as if you are flying an international long haul with them.
