Multi trip USA trip

I was looking for some advice on a trip I'm planning on taking with 3 friends next September.

The plan is fly to LAX from London spend about 4 days in LA, then go to Anaheim spend a few days at Disney. We then plan on flying to San Francisco from John Wayne airport as I have been told it's closer to Anaheim than LAX. We will have a few days in San Francisco and then move on to Las Vegas for 6/7 nights. Ideally we would fly back from Vegas to London.

My question is how would one go about booking flights? Is it best to book multi centre flights to LA and home from Vegas with one airline and then all internal through say South Western or the like?

I'm open to suggestions as I'm in early days of planning this trip.

Thanks in advance

You'll have to do the maths yourself there's no easy way to know.

One other consideration is that if you book it as two sets, for example out to lax, back from SFO with a stopover at las, and book the internal flights separately, then should you miss one of those other internal flights your others won't be cancelled. If you book all five or six flights as one itinerary, miss any one and the subsequent ones will be cancelled.

But you'll have to try all the combos. At a start, try the basic return, out to lax back from las and others separately, and then start adding internal ones in.

Shop around. Try the airlines BA, United and Virgin to see which routes they do. Travel companies like Kuoni, Funways and Trailfinders are good companies to book multi centre trips with. LHR - LAX - SFO - LAS - LHR is a common multicentre choice for Brits.

Isn't it usually much more expensive to book one way flights so say LHR to LAX then LAS back to LHR. I have done a mock booking sadly not for the dates we require as those are not yet available to book and it always seems to come up very expensive.

I'm not overly concerned about internal flights being cancelled as we aren't going to be connecting to another flight as we will be spending time in each city at the lest 3 days in each.

You wouldn't be booking one ways, you'd be booking a multi city sorry when you referred to that in your first post I thought you were aware of that. On the airline website select the multi city option, there's usually a link or a tab near or within the booking box. So for first flight you'd put London to LAX and the date, second flight would be (say) SFO to LAS and date, third flight LAS to LHR and date .

It's more complicated to explain than use ! Try it.

Ps when you select multi city, let's say LHR to LAX and then LAS to LHR you get pretty much the same price as if you'd booked the average of a LHR to LAX return and LHR to LAS return so its much cheaper than buying two singles.

Ok thanks. Most airlines have this facility on their sites I assume.

Is it best to do it independently or through a specialist travel agent? Personally I want to organise the whole trip flights, hotels myself but my friends want us to at lest speak to a travel agent. I think it'll cost more than booking it ourselves.

Internal flights, usually the one way ticket is half the round trip so you could book the internal flights that way. Have to do a lot of searching to see what is cheapest

John Wayne is a lot closer/easier from Anaheim than LAX but if you had to do LAx, it's not that bad.

Great thanks and south western fly John Wayne to San Francisco so that will work out nicely.

------yes. Southwest might not as they are a point to point airline I think. All the ones that do the international part will.

------------ most people here book independently so that's the answer you are likely to get. But again no way to know without trying both. If I was to use a travel agency I'd personally only consider Trailfinders most of the rest of the "big names" are a sorry bunch. Perhaps you have a local small travel agency but there aren't many of those left. Downside of a travel agent is, any changes you have to go through them, but that could also be an upside. More need for them if you are in the Upper Limpopo looking to have a flight reorganised, less of an issue when in Las Vegas :-)

But that does raise another point, if you book two sets of flights and changes do need to be made to one leg, that doesn't mess up the whole schedule.

Thanks, this has helped me lots I was originally thinking we would have to fly to and from LAX for international flights which would of meant another internal flight from LAS to LAX. Now I know this isn't the case.
