Stopover - Vancouver, BC, Canada to Bangkok, Thailand

It is a very long flight from YVR to BKK. Do airlines offer a chance to stopover for a couple of night somewhere, perhaps Hong Kong or Tokyo, without imposing extra fees or turning it into two flights?

I have never tried to book this before.

That would be nice, but sadly, the answer is NO. I got routed through YVR on my way to Bangkok last fall - actually not that bad at all if you're lucky enough to fly the way I did (Korean Air connection to Asiana). Arrived in BKK late at night without a hotel, but all you do is stop at the "Hotel" desk, and they get you one PDQ.

You should call a travel agent for that. We often do tickets for clients and Cathay will allow a free stop in Hong Kong, sometimes you can get one in Tapei or Narita as well. We book these via consolidators and you can have one free stop. Great fares are available as well depending on the time of travel.

You can occasionally get a stopover included depending on the carrier and routing, but by the time you reach Hong Kong you have only about three hours left of flying time. So why not just get it done with and enjoy more time in Thailand.

If you are going to make a stopover, make it a good one. Stay for a couple of days at least, so you can see the city, not simply walk around in a fog for a few hours before returning to the airport to check back in for the BKK leg.

I have flown to SE Asia on holiday out of Vancouver, BC a number of times in the last few years on Cathay Pacific. Cathay allows a stopover at no charge in either direction and I have done so on several occasions, usually for two or three nights on the outbound and once for a week on the way back to Canada.

I usually book online on the Cathay website and it allows you to book a stopover as well. Cathay also offers a stopover package with deals on hotels which you can also book on its website.

YYZ-BKK is a lot longer, couldn't see any reason to stop in HKG in the middle of the night when you arrive in BKK first thing in the morning, catch the Sky Link to your hotel in town where you can rest & clean up.
