You clear immigration and customs at your first point of entry in the US: that will be Newark. At Newark you will have to collect your luggage to take it through customs, and then you recheck it for your next flight. If you're flying on a single ticket, or if the airlines have a baggage agreement, the bag should be tagged all the way through, and you should be able to drop it at the desk without going through all the fuss of a full recheck, but since I never check luggage someone else will have to describe that procedure in more detail.

Don't specifically remember EWR but the bag drop facilities should be located immediately after customs. You don't need to recheck the bag, you just dump it on a conveyor belt.

You'll firstly clear US Immigration, collect bags, clear US Customs and then drop off your bag at the airline (United?) drop off point just after customs, it's a lot easier than checking them in and it's nothing more than handing them back to the airline. You then need to get to your departure gate which will probably require you to clear airport security.

Make sure when you check in at EDI that your bags are tagged to Chicago.

Assuming this is all one ticket, at Newark you definitely can drop the bag right after customs. After you get off the plane, you go through immigration, which takes a while, then you claim your bag from a normal baggage carousel, then you go through customs, which is very fast. Right after you exit customs, there should be an airline employee and a conveyor and they'll take it from you. You do not have to wait in a line to re-check your bag or carry it anywhere. After you drop the bag, you make your way upstairs to the departure level, go through security, and head to your gate.
