FYI - EVA Airways to join Star Alliance on June 18th 2013

Here's the news -

wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx…

This will provide a huge benefit to United and other * fliers in the US, who travel to Asia and especially SE Asia. EVA's flights from the US depart late night/very early morning (the 2300-0200 range). This means that instead of having to wait until noon the next day to fly, I'll be able to finish work, and go straight to the airport to fly out, and I'll arrive in SE Asia at around midday rather than very late at night. Similarly, the return flights leave Asia in the late afternoon/early evening rather than stupid o'clock morning (5-6am) getting into the US the evening the same day. That will effectively give me an extra 24 hours; either an extra day in Asia, or the same time but with one less vacation day to take.

Now let's hope the frequent flyer mile (especially elite qualification) accrual rate is decent for Star partners. :-)

Eva has had agreements with several airlines, including US Airways (Star Alliance, but soon to be in Oneworld after it merges with American) and British Airways (Oneworld).

Do you know when we can book Eva flights using pts from other Star Alliance programs?

That would be June 18. However EVA and United already have their own FF arrangement so you can book EVA flights using United miles now. They also have existing agreements with Air China, Asiana, ANA, Shenzhen Airlines and US Airways.

EVA has now officially joined Star Alliance, and so you now have the full Star benefits when flying BR.

Be aware that the cheapest fare buckets on EVA earn zero miles and therefore likely zero elite qualifying miles/points. So if EQMs is important be very careful when booking, especially through travel agents and online bookers (which you shouldn't do anyway). The EVA website does clearly indicate when fares earn zero miles, and displays the fare bucket for each segment.

As one example/datapoint, here's the mileage and PQM/S earning chart for United MileagePlus. For other Star carriers YMMV (pun intended).
