flightcentre.co.uk lack of support.

We were traveling to Sabah, Sandaka. UK FCO, AUSTRLIAN DFAT USA GOVERMENT AND MALAYSIAN GOVERMENT ETC... HAVE ADVISED AGAINST TRAVEL TO SABAH. However flightcenter.co.uk Michael Shelton says its not their problem

They seem rubbish and don't seem to care. This is the email I have sent today 17/03/2013:

Hi Michael,

Sarah has asked me to contact you. I have copied her on this email.

Sarah and her daughter were planning on joining us on a once in a life time holiday for them in Sabah. I understand that her final leg out and first leg back is on Malaysian. Every other party traveling is using Malaysian as well and they (Malaysian) have without question changed all flights regardless of contractual conditions, to now fly to Kota Kinabulo.

It is the Malaysian Government that have declared this region a 'Special Security Area’ It includes the towns of Sandakan, Lahad Datu town and Tawau and their respective airports. It also includes the towns of Kunak and Semporna and the islands immediately off the coast, including Sipadan.

The FCO advise those currently in the region to consider leaving as soon as practicable and to follow the advice of the local police authorities.

I find it unbelievable that you or behalf of Flight Center are the only company that has not tried to help. Even worse are willing to have two single ladies travel there!

I am presently traveling in Africa on business, so can only get email, but would appreciate your immediate response to the above, in addition to you providing the customer complaints email address for you organisation (as it does not seem possible to find this on the web!) relevant information for IATA. The CAA we know well and will be contacting them direct.

As a travel company, you know doubt understand the importance of referral, as a regular Business Traveler I am an avid user of Trip Advisor and have posted this under my name.

Yes another reason to book direct with the airline. I dont know how much your sister saved, but £20 off or whatever, likely doesn't seem worth it in retrospect, there always seems to be hassle when change occurs, most third parties, with few exceptions, seem to be set up to sell and nothing else.

Can your sister claim on her travel insurance?

I can't see what OP is actually asking the travel agent to do.

Change their flights ...clearly the FC rep couldn't be bothered as there is no commission to be earned

I doubt that a travel agent would say "not our problem" as you allege.

Has the Flight Centre agent said that they will not change your friends' flight plans, or just that

they will not change them free of charge.

If it is the latter, it is time for your friends to check the terms of their travel insurance, which any prudent traveller arranges at the time of booking.

And it you intend to go ahead with your complaints to the agencies you mention, please mention just the core facts of the matter. They will not care if it is your friends' trip of a lifetime or a flight they take every week.

I also can't see what the OP is asking for. Yes I can read between the lines but it's not called out. Or can I? The OP says "Sarah and her daughter were planning on joining us .... in Sabah.". If they want to be rerouted away from Sabah that is confusing.

It's a poorly framed letter. Stick to the facts, don't get emotional (as above says "trip of a lifetime" doesn't enter into it), and explicitly state what you want. It would also be far better if "Sarah", who presumably booked the tickets and is the main traveler, raised the issue herself. And it would help if you got the name of the airline right; it's MALAYSIA, no "n".

For that matter, it's Kota Kinabalu.

I would have to agree with the posts stating that there was no clear statement about what the OP wanted. There are no clear facts, and no referral to what the Flight Centre agent had talked about.

Many people are willing to put blame on their agent if the agent tells them something they don't want to hear, but in many cases, terms and conditions of fares, etc. are given at the time of booking. There are tons of cases where travelers are bound by the terms of the airlines, and without the help of an agent, they would be left to fend for themselves. I would rather have a large agency in my corner helping me navigate travel pitfalls than be on my own.

Too many questions left unaswered by the OP to really use this information to judge a company.

Agree with the other comments. The OP needs to re-write the email or send another and be VERY clear on what they want. I.e.

Dear FC.

With regrards to my previous email, we would like you to change the flights for person X and person Y to be via X on the following dates :

- Outbound X

- Inbound Y

Kind regards

I.e. Make it PERFECTLY clear on what you want. Don't ask FC to guess. Tell them the exact details and let them response to that.
