Try doing a google search, and you'll easily pull up all this information.

It's not on arrival.

It's called ETA, you can do all that online and there is a small fee.

But I agree with gracie, Google would have known all that right away. And it will even tell you the exact fee and how to apply. ;)

start here with a visa application:

http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/

if indeed u do qualify for an ETA it costs $20.

approval is usually almost immediate but not always the case.

for this reason the aus gov recommends applying for visas before finalizing travel arrangements.

i think the above advice is a little snarky. the danger of 'just googling' is that there are many commecial sites offering australian visa services on that search engine which can be confusing and which are not always the most efficient.

the official government site is obvioulsy the best to go with.

Well sorry it wasn't supposed to sound snarky. It's just that many people don't even try to find it out themselves...so it was more like an advise for the next time because I didn't feel like doing the Google search he could do himself...

I should have added to only use official .gov sites, though.

But since you've looked up the link anyway he's gonna do it right.

The ETA is simple and fast... usually faster than typing in a post on tripadvisor and waiting for even the first reply. The $20 is good for in and outs for a year.

as i said it's good to get the information on this (or the australian) forum from those that know how our visa application system works rather than rely on a google search.

u would be amazed at the number of people who have come 'unstuck' using the non government visa sites that inevitably come up prioritized on google.

the problems include paying too much or in fact paying for what should be free.

too right friend just got stung for US ETSA by clicking on the wrong link to apply

Remember TA was set up solely to assist travellers who are inexperienced and what's the bet the first thing that pops up on google is a TA forum thread not the site you want/need!

Yes stephanie, every non-Australian citizen coming to Australia for any reason needs the correct visa.

stephanie,

When you visit Australia, most visitors need a visitor's visa, no matter how short a visit if it involves exiting the airport.

Different countries do this differently and different rules apply to visitors from different countries, which is one of the reasons governments have official websites addressing this issue.

If you want to work, you need a different sort of visa.

If you want to visit, you may need a visitor's visa. For someone travelling on a US passport, this needs to be purchased in advance.

Fortunately, that is fairly simple to do, on-line on the official government website.
