Heathrow to Edinburgh

Arriving terminal 3 Heathrow at 15.30 with intention of driving to Edinburgh, the next day.

Our plan is to travel from T3 to T4, stay at the Hilton and pick up hire car from there.' Is this a good idea or are there better alternatives?

All the main car hire places are on the north side of the airfield, the Hilton & T4 on the south side. Any reason for the Hilton? There are more convenient hotels for the car hire joints all along the Perimeter Road/Bath Road.

If you are travelling directly to Edinburgh then why not just fly? This would be a much better alternative given that it would save you an 8 hr + drive on congested roads.

If your plan is to visit other places on the way then that is different matter and i can't advise on the specifics of car hire at Heathrow. Someone else who can should be along in a while :-)

What fundriver said in post 2, if you are going direct, it will be far easier to fly, especially if you can add or incorporate a LHR-EDI ticket onto your somewhere-LHR ticket.

+1 Seems a daft drive unless there's a specific reason to do it. There's not even any scenery to see until you hit Cumbria.

It is such a long drive! Our roads are very congested and it will take you many many hours. IMHO it would be far easier to fly to Edinburgh.

I agree with all the suggestions to fly unless you want to do it over 2 days - roads here are not like those in Australia where you can drive for hours outside the main cities and only see a handful of other vehicles.

If you are intending to fly in to LHR on QF you should be able to buy a ticket straight through to Edinburgh - flying from T5 on BA. If you've already bought your ticket you may still be able to interline your bags straight throw which would mean you just have to get yourselves over to T5 and not worry about picking your bags up at LHR.

"You can also get a straight through train from Kings Cross to Edinburgh - www.thetrainline.com"

Except don't book it (or any UK rail tickets) on thetrainline, who charge booking fees. For London-Edinburgh use the EastCoast or National Rail websites. You may be able to get very cheap Advance fares for off peak services.

If you were to do this, then look into hotels in the KIngs Cross area of London, which can be reached by tube in about an hour. The London forum will be able to help here too.
