emirates carry on luggage restrictions

I noticed that Emirates has posted the restrictions on their website as follows: 22 x 15 x 8 inches (55 x 38 x 20 cm) and must weigh no more than 15 lb (7 kg).

I would like to buy a carry on luggage style backpack and found some examples: The Lowe Alpine TT Carry-On 40 55x35x23cm (21x13x9in), and the Kathmandu Litehaul Pack v2 55H x 31W x 23D both of which are specialist carry on luggage style backpacks, yet they exceed the Emirates requirements.

What do you think?

Both of them can squish down to fit, so just don't stuff them

Agree with Alan, if they were hard cases I would be worried but soft back packs can be easily manipulated to fit the gauge, providing it isn't stuffed to bursting.

Unfortunately one size does not fit all for carry on luggage for airlines. I look at new carry on luggage in stores which states 'fits most airline carry on regulations' and wonder how many people get caught out with the differences in whats allowed for size airlines.

I have 3 different size of carry on bags dependent on who I am travelling with then I know alls ok with the size.

But as already stated as your carry on is a back pack and if not bursting at the seams, should be fine.

I find it quite annoying to see that label on carry on luggage in shops saying that it conforms to most airline regulations, as it doesn't, I also have different carry ons for various airlines.

I have a carry on which is of the wheeled variety and if I stuff it, it would be over the limit, as others have said don't over fill. Emirates have been known to weigh hand luggage so don't exceed the 7 kgs.limit either, just to be on the safe side.

Consider that the dimension that exceeds the stated measurements is across the bottom of the bag and it may not be "squishable" in that dimension. Emirates and Qantas both have much the same restrictions.

Also watch the weight of the bag. If it comes in at 3kg you have already used almost half your weight allowance.

I have searched long and hard. There are very few WHEELED squishable bags that meet these dimensions. There is a very cheap, light wheeled backpack from Strandbags that meets the requirements. There are quite a few wheeled rectangular suit cases that fit, and many sports type bags without wheels. Maybe one wheeled computer shaped bag that is also light enough, but the one we bought falls flat on its face when loaded.

I think any wise luggage maker would have a label 'fits most airline specifications' as there is always one airline who deliberately goes against the grain. BMI baby comes to mind.

Just came through Emirates CDG Paris this morning and one check in person was weighing hand luggage where another wasnt. Had to negotiate with them for professional camera gear that was over the 7 KGs. Did get it through but they weren't too happy.
