I just flew out of DFW, two planes failed on the gate (Frankfurt and Madrid) and the London one had an unexplained delay. Staff are even more demoralised and demotivated than before their recent problems, I am going to avoid them from now on

Yes, they're under chapter 11 bankruptcy filing/protection.

Shows that you should always re-check your sources - AA has been in bankruptcy for 11 months now.

More likely than not American will end up becoming part of US Airways :

Many airlines have filed for protection under bankruptcy and not stopped flying, and later emerged from bankruptcy. Lots of other business, as well. Doesn't mean they'll fold like Pan Am and otehrs have. AA is much bigger than US, so which will become "part" of the other may not be clear. I read that America West was bigger than USAir when they merged, but the latter's name was deemed as being more marketable, especially nationwide and internationally (though an airline called America West, with an Old West motif, could have been a hit in some countries I know of). AA is better known internationally, and has a larger fleet, so if they do merge, I could see the AA name remaining.

AA and US merging would be a real bust for the flying public, especially FF members. Both airlines fly a large number of similar routes and suddenly adding all those FF members would drastically reduce the number of available seats.
