Emirates 777/A380 Vs Etihad A330/A340

Hi,

I'm planning on travelling to Australia late 2011, has anyone had a chance to fly on any of these aircraft and if so would you recommend any?

I'm 6'2" so legroom is paramount in my scenario. I would love to fly the A380, but the 3-4-3 configuration worries me, I would much prefer the 2-4-2 on offer by Etihad.

Cheers!!

Then book with Etihad.

Once you are inside the tube it really doesn't matter much how many engines or what colour the outside is. Take the flight you feel will be most comfortable on.

Its no wonder that there are so many one post wonders on this forum. The op asked a perfectly reasonable question, and he gets snark in reply. He provides sufficient detail so that someone who has flown on these aircraft could give him some evaluation of the comfort level on the plane. That's what I would have done if I had flown on either plane on either airline.

Haha, I know! It wasn't worded quite properly, but I'm sure most can understand what I was getting at!

Don't worry, I won't be put off!!

We've flown both. Emirates last November Manchester (A380) to Dubai (B777) to Kuala Lumpur and a couple of years ago MAN (A340) to Abu Dhabi (A330) to Bangkok. No problems with legroom for us but I'm only 5'9" and Mrs.A 5' Nowt. The seating in Emirates though is narrower and we did enjoy the 2-4-2 Etihad configuration. Down to price I think.

Normally I would go for the Etihad flights, however I'm really keen to travel on the A380 - quite a dilemma!

If you are travelling economy and you want the 380 experience imho you will have to consider singapore airlines for this route. This is because probably the 'fun' of the 380 is to get an upstairs seat and with emirates you will only do so with 1st/business (unless recently changed). In the main economy 'tube' the experience is probably the same as any other flight so you may as well go Etihad for better configuration.

I can't comment on the A380 but having experienced 10-abreats cattle class cabin configuration of both the Emirates and Air France I would definitely avoid the 777 if I could... and whoever came up with the idea of cramming so many seats into the aircraft should be tried in The Hague for crimes against humanity.

BTW, as if things were not bad enough already there are rumors that EK has some "high-density" cabin configuration A380s on order which will be delivered in the next couple of years, when the "new and trendy" image of the whalejet wears off. Therefore we could see 11-abreast A380 at some point in the future and the only hurdle to prevent this are authorities issuing safety certification for such configuration to comply with the 90 sec evacuation time limit.

Something to be aware of, flew a330 and 777 of Qatar airways recently and while I generally prefer 2-4-2 seating for a couple, the window seats had the IFE box beneath which ate into legroom a lot, 777 much newer plane and much smaller box (and only every third seat rather than every two) and was far better for a tall person. Next time i fly to far east I will bear this in mind. Clearly I don't know if this is an issue on Etihad a330, but pretty sure that on an emirates a380 it wouldn't be. Worth checking out/asking.
