Thrust of jet engine to B/H/Power?

A quicky for the Academics please.

I saw at Honolulu Airport some years ago a Jet

motor which was rated at 36000 lbs thrust.

How many B/H/Power is that = to. The mind boggles.

All help Greatly Appreciated,,,N.W.F.....

1. Re: Thrust of jet engine to B/H/Power?

An odd question, but the answer is there is no direct comparison. Thrust is a measure of power exerted on a object, while power (BHP, whatever) is a measure of motion created when force is exerted on an object over time. (I'm the sure the physicists can correct my handling of this.)

It's complicated as power is measured as a direct relation of force to distance to the amount of time that it takes to move an object that distance.

Roughly speaking 550lb-ft/sec of thrust is equal to 1hp. However a jet engine is normally rated in accordance with a static thrust test. However if it is stationary, i.e. not travelling any distance the the power and therefore the hp will be zero.

Also Jet aircraft are very rarely throttled to full power. I think even on take off the maximum rated thrust should be no more than 80% though I'm not 100% on this.

This article explains all and after you have reaed it lie down in a dark room :-)

Hi People,

MANY thanks for the replies. The part about the 747 was mainly interesting and although I am like

many others in all honesty do not comprehend the

Mathematics of the Theorems I will never tire of the

crescendo of the take off power of all of these

great motors.

In the meantime I will go back to tuning my ZZ4

Chevy powered Series 2 Daimler XJ12 and be happy

with the results..All the Very best from N.W.F...
