We popped into 1910 the old forge for Sunday roast on our way home. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere cozy and the food delicious. They had an electricity outage and yet served up a warm and perfectly cooked meal.

My partner made a reservation for Sunday lunch at 1910 The Old Forge. We discovered the owners owned a guesthouse (Maison De La Mour) so decided to do an overnight. A great decision. We stayed in the Gardener Suite, did dinner at Old Forge as well as lunch the following day-very different menus as Sunday lunch is 2 or 3 course Roast special with live entertainment and very reasonably priced. The Fillet Steak and Patagonian Calamari were both outstanding. We spent a wonderful Sunday afternoon listening to superb music by Cape Town musician Neil Lindt-what a voice. He apparently does weddings, birthdays, etc and has an outstanding voice. Nina was a super hostess both at the restaurant and guesthouse. cannot recommend both venues highly enough. One does need to be patient with the service, but really whats the hurry.

Such an interesting place, lots of different, quirky things to look at. The guy who served us was very friendly and knowledgeable, always smiling. The food was fantastic, the best squid I’ve ever had in a restaurant. My sister asked to meet the chefs to thank them for the great food and they were lovely guys, quite humble about their abilities. I definitely want to visit the restaurant again next time I’m here visiting my sister and her family.

This location was advertised as open for business. When we arrived, we were told that a large group of 40 plus people were booked for lunch and we would be unlikly to be served any lunch for a considerable time. This was very disappointing as our visitors were from Italy on a short vacation at the wonderful Town of Darling.

The only reason I have given the restaurant such a poor rating is because after sitting down for 2 hrs and 1.5hrs after ordering we still had not received our food I had to demand from the Owner that if our food was not on the table within 5mins we would walk. We were told an hour and that we were prepared for. Suddenly our food arrived and it was delicious to say the very least. We shared a whole lot of starters and I can highly recommend the chicken livers, the mussels and the calamari. The Caesar Salad was a disappointment however and expensive for what was received. Unfortunately there are no food photos as we were so hungry that we wolfed down the food as soon as it hit the table. Alex who seems to run the restaurant was a delight and had us in stitches and together with the Chef( who came to the table) apologized profusely for the delay, whilst the Owner seemed unperturbed and sat in the sun drinking with her friends.

An absolute gem in the heart of Darling, the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon with good friends, listening to Michael Lindt playing such a fabulous selection of songs. The food is always outstanding, Alex, Malvin and Cathy are incredibly attentive, thanks to Nina and Derek for creating this little spot of old-world charm and pleasure. I highly recommend The Forge for lunch or dinner and their sister Guest House Maison De L'maour is just as quaint, Nina and Derek's attention to detail is world-class.

Just my type of place. A lot of attention to detail. Quirky with lots of books and crannies to explore. Even the small ones were catered to with the beautiful playground. Just one big problem….the wait. People after us got served first and we landed up getting our food one and a half hours after ordering. Our 11 year old boys were gripping their cutlery so hard that I feared they would go for the parading rooster outside. We all gulped the food as soon as it was presented before it. I do not even know if it was good because it was good or good because we were starving…

Lovely atmosphere , huge surprise .We stopped by for lunch , group of 3. Service was great , enjoyed a selection of Darling Cellars whites . We were served with freshly baked bread for the table , beautifully presented. Mains insisted of Patagonian Calamari , Mussels , Scallops all of which were excellent . I remarked to the chef that lunches bettered anything I had enjoyed in Cape Town that week .

The Old Forge is a beautiful Restuarant in Darling. Nina and her staff serve world class food and do it with style. The service is on point and we felt as though we could sit there all day just enjoying ourselves on the delicious fare. Great job everyone!

What a lovely surprise to find this little restaurant out in Darling. Sitting outdoors with lovely weather we were treated to a fabulous liver starter and delicious lamb and sirloin roast with the most amazing roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Alex, our waiter a delight, as were Nina and Derk our hosts. Live music and a fabulous choice of wines. We had a lovely relaxed afternoon. Thank you. We most certainly will be back.

The owners and staff of The 1910 Old Forge arranged a private birthday lunch (40 people) for us on the grass under the umbrellas. Such a beautiful setting and ambiance with an abundance of amazing food and snacks served to us by the friendly and very efficient waiters. Glasses stayed full with the excellent Darling wines. All done with such ease and grace. Glynn Lewis kept us singing along and tapping our feet to our favorite songs. A perfect day .... agreed by everyone. We'll be back.

Not sure what happened the night we visited, as no-one ever explained the delays. The venue is fantastic, beautifully decorated and a real oasis in Darling. The waiting service is also fantastic start to finish, the enthusiasm and constant interaction was appreciated. There were some minor issues (wine bottle delivered already opened and not poured to be tasted despite us asking to taste first), but in general this is not something we would have remarked on, and we were happy to tip generously for the service from the waiting staff. The issue was somewhere in the kitchen. The restaurant was full, and most people seemed to arrive at 7:30pm to 8pm. Everyone ordered promptly around the same time at or around 8pm or so (load shedding was due at 10pm so we were all asked to be prompt by the waiters which made absolute sense). Then we all sat and waited... Bread platter arrived at 9pm for most tables which was (for us) an hour after ordering. Worth the wait as it was delicious. Sides for our mains arrived at 9:20pm which we sent back since we still had not had our starter. The waiter then told us all our food was ready and he intended to bring it all together. Since it made no sense to us to eat oysters at the same time as thai curry we declined this and said we would prefer our starters first as ordered. He agreed. Starters arrived at 9:30pm, 90 minutes after ordering. Mains arrived at 9:50pm and had basically been kept warm for us in the kitchen for 45 minutes. No explanation was given for the delays. The waiters checked back regularly with us but after three times of saying "yes, we are fine but we are still waiting for our starters" there was nothing much more to say. Should we have asked for the manager to get an explanation? Not sure, we didn't want to make a fuss when the waiters were constantly checking if we were OK, but were not providing any explanation to our questions apart from assuring us our food would arrive "just now". All in all the menu was fine, the food was good (thai curry) to excellent (oysters) and we were in no rush. We were conscious that the other tables around us complained at the delays and then had mains comped and a free drink provided due to the delays so we were not alone feeling things were very slow. All in all a lovely place, and we have no idea what the delay was on the night, but we wish them all success and would certainly recommend others to go there - just allow enough time in case there are similar delays the night you are there.

The Old Forge 1910 is the most delicious meal you’ll get in Darling. The Fillet was cooked to perfection and the staff and chef are friendly and the atmosphere is warm. Drinks are well priced and the music and decor makes for really lovely evening out in Darling. Highly recommended.

This charming old converted barn, transformed into a cosy but upmarket, bar and restaurant is a MUST if you find yourself in Darling West Coast of Western Cape South Africa. The ambiance is incredible, the fine dining is simply delicious, staff are amazing. Owned and run by Derek and Nina Poole it is an absolute must for either, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Thank you Derek and Nina for a wonderful experience and one I will definitely repeat.

Breakfast at this tranquille garden was a delight. The Old Forge has been restored or re-created in a fabulous new light. All of this was superbly enhanced by our lovely waitress who answered our questions and provided us with literature of the area. Peaceful and delightful.
