We have been going to the Alford Arms for several years, both for dining, casual bar snacks and drinks. The refurbishment has been completed to a high standard and thankfully the Alford has retained much of its original charm. However, on the last two occasions when asking for a small wine we have been given a medium. I let it... More

Apart from a few country cottages on the same road, this pub is in the middle of nowhere, a very picturesque nowhere. The bubble and squeak starter served with bacon and poached egg was delicious. The pork belly literally melts in the mouth although I felt that the jus was a touch on the sweet side but that's being picky.... More

Went back to the Alford Arms after its re-opening and its so nice to go back and see nothing has changed. The service is excellent and the food is absolutely terrific. They always have something interesting on the main menu with very good specials. The beer is well kept and the atmosphere is very convivial to a pleasant evening. The... More

The reputation for the AA is well known. Booked for an American colleague as I knew he would enjoy the experience. Not disappointed. Service, food, ambiance all first class. Visit and enjoy!

At last it's reopened and it's as lovely as ever. So pleased for them and for us! I had a 50th birthday dinner there with the usual bubble & squeak and it was fab. Love sitting in the bar area where we can bring our dog. Sets the benchmark for miles around. I would highly recommend.

This takes country pub dining to a whole new level. Sophisticated yet simple dishes, full of flavour and country goodness. Lovely staff in a warm relaxed atmosphere. But you'd better book well ahead as it's very popular and was crammed on both Sundays we went and even full on a Tuesday evening. Smallish carpark for number of guests and you... More

Modern British/ French style. food, the Pot au Feu Rabbit was excellent, simply presented with quality ingredients. As was the Pork & Chicken mains eaten by my French friends. They... More

After their fire, it was good to see the Alford up and running again. Beer was as good as ever, and the place was packed on a Friday lunchtime!

Knew we would be passing through the area the next day and selected this place from the Good Pub Guide noting it was Herts dining pub of the year. Tried to use the on-line booking provider from their website but it said there was no availability, however phoned to check and got a table no problem! Suggest you change your... More

Visited the Alford arms last night with family for my wife's birthday and I must say the food was amazing! The bubble and squeak starter was lovely! The best dish of the evening was the roasted lamb belly and pearl barley risotto....absolutely amazing! The staff were really nice and helpful. One of our guests were running late and wouldn't be... A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.
