Marvellous food by great hosts in a magical setting. If you like history, don't miss the hideout where General Kreipe was kept for two days by his English and Greek abductors, with great help from the cousin of Βασίλης. We found out the soul of...Crete at Πατσός. Ευχαριστώ πολύ, Βασίλης και Μαρία!More

We could not dream of a better experience. Patsos Traditional Taverna is not a typical restaurant. You will not find a proper menu here however be prepared to share what you like with Vassilis when you call him to book a table for the evening....You can choose a great meat from the oven, stuffed tomatoes, wine leaves or zucchini flowers - all prepared by his mother from the ingredients straight from their garden. BTW - kids were amazed joining Vassilis' mom in preparation of a dinner for another guests! :) Aaaaa - and be prepared for a long yet extremely interesting stories about Patsos Gorge as well as the history of the village and it's brave inhabitants that Vassilis will share with you over the dinner - his knowledge and passion is just extraordinary! Absolutely one of the must visit places in Crete, we will definitely come back next year!More

‏Even before we arrived Vasilis was kind and tolerant on the phone, when we met him in his tavern we were greeted by a person who loves people and made us feel home from the first moment. The man is full of knowledge, knows every...stone in the area and in Crete in general, explained to us about the route that later turned out to be a real paradise. After the trip we went back to the tavern and ate a great lunch that his mother cooked, everything was just wonderful. ‏We highly recommend to reach as ‏far as Pastos, meet Vasilis and his mother, refresh yourself in the spring water ,walk an easy route right inside paradise and taste the great traditional cooking of his mother. You will not be sorry, promise!More

Maria's Taverna is on the ground floor in the main square in Patsos, small traditional village with a popular place to enjoy traditional Cretan cuisine. Maria is amazing, putting out so many dishes and beautifully prepared. Her son Vasillis is also a village treasure. He's...a wonderful person to talk with about the area and the history and beauty around the village. Check out his website as he also provides many guiding services and recommendations. patsosescapes.com I rented the lovely apartment upstairs. It is fully equipped for several, but was just great for me. It has a full kitchen and dishware etc, but I ate at Maria's! Enjoy your stay in this picturesque villageMore

This traditional Greek restaurant offers great dishes made daily by Mother Maria, with local products she grows. We loved the stuffed vegetables and cooked lamb.

We met Vassilis and his mother Maria by chance in the small village patsos, on our way to the patsos gorge. He was very friendly and gave us all the informations we needed to get to the patsos gorge. Afterwards we came back to the...restaurant to eat some lunch, which his mother prepared. It was by far the best meal we had in Crete. And even though it was extremely tasty and fresh it was inexpensive. I would recommend everyone to go to that restaurant. It was an authentic and unique Greek experience my girlfriend and I really enjoyed.More

We walked through the Patsos Gorge and met Vassilis. He turned out to be our hero of the day. He explained a lot about the area and offered us a lift back to the village, where his mother has a Taverne. Everything she cooks is...very fresh and from their own garden. Very authentic, very Greek and very tasty! They have been so kindly and warm hearted - we would come back at any time!! It’s definitely it to stop there and get to know them.More

we came to this Taverna by random. It was a very good Experience, because Vassillis and his cooking Mother Maria were very friendly, authentic and the food was absolutely amazing. Although there was no menu given, we could have a look in the Kitchen and...see, what was cooked in the oven. just one choice of meal, but that was enough for us. the charge of 23 Euro was fair for two people including a Creek Salad, Tzatziki and 2 main meals and drinks. we will come again ...More

One of the BEST and most authentic experiences we’ve ever had. The tavern is run by Vassilis, who takes Cretan hospitality to an entirely new level. He is so generous with his time, expertise, and knowledge - his passion for Patsos and the Cretan people...is contagious. His mother does all the cooking, so you will not only experience authentic local culture but you’ll enjoy home cooked traditional Cretan meals...these were by far the best meals we had in Crete (after five weeks in Crete). You will leave feeling like you are family. Patsos is a gem of an area, with nature right at your doorstep so you can feel fully immersed in the Cretan mountains. It is also centrally located and relatively close to Rethymno, allowing for easy access and day trips to many other parts of the island. Also, if you’re a history buff, this was one of the stops during WWII where the captured German General Kriepe was hidden for two nights (Christopher McDougall’s book Natural Born Heroes). You will not regret getting off the beaten path to come here - it will be hard to say goodbye when your trip is over!More
