This was not our first visit, but this is our first review of the White Oak. The summer menu wasn't as broad or varied as I had expected, and we were slightly underwhelmed. However, after plumping for the steak, we were very happy. Blue cheese topping was delicious. Service was great, and we have enjoyed every visit here. One of... More

We visited this pub after seeing recommendations in 'the good pub guide' and weren't disappointed. A proper gastro pub in a great location for walks along the Thames near Cookham, we were impressed by the internal and external appearance, and theadventurous menu, and the food didn't disappoint. It was very nice, and just what we expected. The staff were great,... More

Took Mum here for Sunday lunch. Mum is slightly disabled but staff were very attentive to make sure she was comfortable. Lunch was fine, pork and the beef was very tender but just wish you had parsnips or cauliflower cheese on plate too. Can't seem to find a pub/restaurant that serves up a, in my opinion, a proper Sunday roast... More

Upper price bracket for the "gastro pub" genre but justified by the quality. Good service and a reasonably imaginative and inventive menu competently prepared and attractively presented. Only criticism is that four of the mains have absolutely no starch component, e.g. skate wing deliciously served with capers and cauliflower puree but desperately needing just a couple of Jersey Royals. Other... More

A pleasant environment where we are delicious food. Great place to go to eat slightly higher end pub food. Polite and efficient service. Liked the quirky way the bill was presented.

Been several times over the years and have never been disappointed. Today had an impromptu lunch. Arrived at 2.00'ish to find that the my choice of starter on the set menu was finished so went off the menu. Had excellent Wygyu pastrami with pickled veg and then skate wings followed by the bets pudding I've ever had: brioche stuffed with... More

Thank you all, another lovely evening. Always welcomed with a smile, love the bar area, seating in the garden if weather permits, great service and good food. Portions on the small side and charging for bread is a personal gripe, but this is not an expensive restaurant. I would prefer to pay a few pounds more and receive a bigger... More

Have eaten here before for Sunday lunch on several occasions and found the food generally good but a little uneven in quality. The service though has normally been very good gastro pub standard but occasionally minor things such as "How's everything?" and then disappearing by the time you have actually swallowed whatever was in your mouth has betrayed either insincerity... A warm, sunny lunchtime in a small garden area was a pleasant setting to start a celebratory meal for our dear friend whose 80th birthday it was. The man at the bar was welcoming and helpful. The food was delicious: the roast cod, excellent, and so too were the chicken breasts. Desserts of brioche donuts, raspberry, and peaches were all... More

We held our wedding reception here in 2011 and wanted to come back every year for our anniversary. In 2013 we came for dinner but were disappointed with the menu and presentation. We left it until 2016 to come back hoping things would have improved but though better, its not as good as it used to be under the previous... More

Description
Bridging the gap between country inn & local restaurant, The White Oaks has established itself as a local favourite. The White Oak is an independent and contemporary 'Gastro Pub' where the kitchen & service sets out to please, & covers all bases from pata negra ham & goats chees and walnut salads to chicken liver parfait & their signature roast chicken ravioli. For mains lots of fresh fish features including Whole Lemon sole, whole Dover Sole and Hake as well as the Suckling Pig Belly to share & daily made pies along with Aubrey Allen British Highland free-range steaks. If that's not enough the desserts tend to be classic but executed very well including creme Brulee, pannacotta and excellent brioche donuts. Set menus also offer decent value (£14/16 for two/three courses at lunch and £19/21 at dinner) running alongside the A la Carte menu. The traditional Roasts is served on Sundays alongside the A La Carte. There's also plenty of good drinking on the Corney & Barrow wine list (look for Delamotte Grand Cru Champagne, Archaval-Ferrer Malbec, & 'Psi' Tempanillo from Michael Sisseck) and a barter bin where you haggle for top end clarets (one has 98 parker points!). The dining room's taupe shades, thick pine beams, cream chandeliers and widely spaced, bare tables match the food's smart, unfussy tone, while warm, engaging staff and a compact, broadly priced wine list also fit the bill.
