Last week I had the pleasure of visiting Dai Dai in Maze (Gero City). It is off the beaten path and not on a rail line. You will need to drive or cycle over the mountain pass from Hida-Hagiwara. This place is for those who are looking for a unique Japanese experience. The owner of Dai Dai, Fumiko, is a wonderful cook who looks for special unique ingredients. She creates wonderful meals based on taste preference. The presentation was spectacular. Fumiko is a gifted Shamisen player and entertained us (after the meal) with her playing. After the meal, you might visit the nearby hotsprings, Miki no Sato. This will be a special experience for you if you want to see rural Japan. The village is 17 miles long and has about 700 residents. There is a beautiful river but no real shops just rice fields and mountains. The people are very friendly and welcoming.

This out of the way place is worth visiting if you are in the region!
The owner/chef is an amazing lady who makes absolutely delicious food, locally sourced and so healthy.
It really was a highlight of our day in the Hida region and we cannot recommend it enough.
