We dined at the S&B while staying up the road at the Kennecott Glacier Lodge. In terms of creative food, this was one of the better meals I've had in a restaurant, period. Stone fruit salad with ricotta and cornbread -- a winner. Elk chops went over big. Sides were terrific. This meal came out to $100 a head, but was actually worth it. The colorful street life passing by is a plus.

Very limited menu with two entree choices a day. The Cesar salad with the innovative addition of fresh crispy apples and crisp bacon was very good. The Copper River salmon Veracruz and the carmel chocolate torte with pistachios were so delicious! Service was great. We will definitely return.

We had a wonderful evening at the Salmon and Bear in mid-June, 2021. We went for the Tasting Menu, and the chef did not disappoint. Each course was creative, visually delightful, and delicious. Many included local surprises, such as pasta with pesto sauce made with dandelion greens from the chef's "front yard". We especially enjoyed the chef's repeated visits to the dining room to see how we were enjoying our meal. And we loved the pastry chef who also served as our waiter - I believe his name is Michael (recently from Chicago). He was professional, engaging, and passionate about his work. Overall a fantastic evening!!

I found this restaurant online and was excited to bring my family of 5 here to eat while in McCarthy. I worked hard to make reservations and had to email them and finally call them several times before we traveled to Alaska. We were greeted warmly by the waiter and he provided good service. We knew this restaurant would be pricey, but we were surprised that you had to buy an entree (3 options for $38-$50 each) and then buy a side for an additional $14 too. My $45ish piece of salmon tasted great, but it was just grilled salmon - and a small piece of salmon at that. There wasn't even a garnish on the plate, just a big plate with a small piece of salmon in the middle. We were starving after traveling the road to McCarthy and we were disappointed. This restaurant is not worth the price. We are the rest of our meals (3x/day x 3 days) at The Potato and loved every meal there. The previous year reviews that led me to the Salmon and Bear do not accurately reflect the July 2022 experience.

After a month traveling around Alaska, we were excited to dine at Salmon and Bear. We, however, were having trouble finding any information online about their menu, pricing, etc. We contacted the restaurant and were told that the menu is seasonal (which we would expect) and a tasting menu would run $50 per person. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and seated by the window. We were handed menus, and were surprised to learn that there was no tasting menu option, which is what we were excited to try. A few starters were listed, and entrees were "pick a protein, pick a vegetable". Protein choices ran $36 for chicken, $43 for a 6 oz. piece of King Salmon, $50+ for a steak. THEN, your vegetable/side options were an extra $14 (campfire sweet potatoes, asparagus, macaroni, etc). After seeing the beautifully plated pics from previous reviews (2021 and earlier), we were disappointed with the current offerings. For a fine dining establishment at these prices, one should expect a thought-out composed dish...not one you have to piece together. Sadly, the cost just wasn't worth the offering, and we chose not to dine here.

First I would like I say that our server was great. However, not only is the menu limited but everything is ala carte and overpriced. We first we ordered the Foraged salad for $13 which consisted of a few freshly picked dandelion green, rose petals and some bluebell flowers. We then ordered the salmon which was cooked nicely but for $43 it should at least come with something else on the plate other than a sprig of baked Spruce. Not what we expected after reading reviews. Very disappointed. I suggest either if the other two places in McCarthy. Especially the Potato.

While visiting McCarthy over a couple of days, we ate at the Salmon & Bear Restaurant and greatly enjoyed each meal there. Staff was friendly and efficient, as well as being great to visit with and helpful. The old lodge represents a slice of the history of the Wrangell St Elias mining days, and is a treat to experience.

The bistro is now renamed to the Bear & Salmon restaurant. The food is very good and service is great. They have chefs that come from all over the US who cook some interesting dinners. When we were there we had a 5 course dinner with the theme “The Foraging Dinner”. It was very Interesting and not something I would have normally tried. I was glad we did! They change it up so ask before you reserve to make sure you won’t be surprised. The breakfasts were plentiful and absolutely perfect. Highly recommend!

The breakfast was a part of our stay with Ma Johnson' hotel. I did feel that the bacon that was served should have been cooked a little longer. Other than that, the food was great!

We had the tasting menu. The food was excellent but we thought very over priced, especially when you add on the wine tasting which was an additional charge. I would go ala Carte next time
