A journey to dine at Mercedes' home in the forest is an adventure. We visited in July 2023 and were glad to come back. Visit her website to learn about her fascinating history. The seven course tasting menu is a surprise, although food restrictions can...be accommodated. The visual elements and taste varieties are stunning. A wonderful touch are courses accompanied by little balls of savory or herbed ice cream, not sweet. Mercedes herself is charming and fascinating. This is a luxury experience with a price to match, but well worth it if it is within your means. And don't dare to try to drive yourself. It's out in the where GPS doesn't work well and you would never find your way home in the dark. Mercedes can recommend car services.More

Such a unique experience that made this worth every cent. Noam served each of the seven courses and introduced them with details of what was involved in the preparation and the ingredients, which were all local, some even coming right out the gardens surrounding the...dining location, which was Noam's home. One course had a mellon scoop portion of mushroom ice cream! Another course had a gluten free toast that Noam made by grinding local seeds and nuts into a flour and it tasted like a sweet rye bread with oodles of butter on it,but there was no butter on it. Each course had a good variety of dishes, some were very delicious, some not, but others at the table enjoyed them. Anyone who enjoys adventures in eating and trying new things should most definitely put this at the top of their list of things to do in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I did various tours during my stay near Tamarindo, and this was unquestionably the one I enjoyed most and will remember the longest.More

What an experience! Mercy hosted 10 of us for an exquisite 7 course dinner at her home. She is an incredible chef and created an imaginative menu. Each course was not only beautifully plated but wonderfully delicious. After Mercy served each course she described what...is in the dish and also where she procured the ingredients..many from her own garden. Many of our dishes included a tasty sorbet with unusual ingredients. Such fun! Thank you Mercy!More

I can't say enough wonderful things about HiR. The evening of our reservation, we shared the table with one other couple. From the moment we arrived, Mercedes (host and chef extrordinaire) made us feel comfortable and welcomed. The vibe is super laid back and casual...(after all, we're eating outdoors in the middle of a jungle). The dinner consisted of seven courses, each tasty and tastefully presented. Our favorites were the pumpkin soup, the bread duo, octupus, chipotle shrimp, and the "chimmi-shrimp." My wife still talked about those "chimmi-shrimp." My wife and I have had the privilage of dining in many "fine dining" restaurants in Europe and the US. An evening at HiR is easily in our top 3. Highly... HIGHLY recommended.More

This is going to be the experience from our trip that I remember forever. Mercedes makes you feel so welcome, the laid back atmosphere feels like you’re coming to dinner at a friend’s house. Her home is perfectly build with openings in the kitchen so...you can chat and watch her prepare your meal. Great conversation and wonderful dishes I would have never tried on my own. From the atmosphere, company, food and conversation she makes you feel like family. I am SO glad I got to have this wonderful experience, it felt like once in a lifetime. Thank you Mercedes!More

If you are visiting Costa Rica and you are within striking distance of this incredible dining experience, it is an absolute must visit for any serious food people. Just to clarify, this is a culinary event geared towards adventurous eaters with no pickiness. Before you...make a required and prepaid reservation, all the details will be laid out for you, so I won’t bother going over all that stuff. When you arrive at Noam’s home, you are immediately transported to a happy place. It’s relaxed, comfortable, welcoming and beautiful. The feel is laid back and communal, the cooking is intelligent yet playful, and the service is warm and informative. Now to the actual food. 7 courses, each course with multiple elements and tons of flavor. The nuts and bolts of each dish utilize all local ingredients. This could’ve just been by coincidence, but our meal did not contain meat. Seafood yes, but no beef/chicken/pork. For the record, I didn’t realize this until I started writing this review. Noam prepares everything in her kitchen behind you, which is open so you can watch, then serves every dish and explains the preparation in great detail. It’s awesome, like dinner theater for a chef. I’ve had a lot of meals I’d like to forget. I’ve paid a bunch of money for some meals I will never remember. This meal will be etched in my brain forever. A phenomenal experience!!More

What made this experience so incredible was Noam. Noam is one of the most genuine, hospitable, and passionate people I have ever met. Our family loves fine dining. We seek it out and drove almost an hour from Playa Conchal to have this meal. We...have eaten at many of the best restaurants in the world. I have never been invited to the chefs house to eat on the porch and had seven courses delivered in such a gracious, humble, and loving way. Many restaurants claim farm to table dining but this was truly a meal that came from Noam’s community, many ingredients from the yard surrounding the house. Noam cooked, plated, and delivered all seven courses without any help with perfect pacing. I have never seen anything like it. The food was excellent and Noam is exceptional.More

This is not your ordinary dining experience. Chef Noam has crafted a menu based upon local ingredients, inspired by personal experience and a seasoned traveler’s knowledge of culture customs and traditions. The menu is playful and not redundant. Do not come if you need a...“choice of entree” or have a list of dietary restrictions. Be prepared to experience novel combinations of food and spices. And Chef Noam expects your input on every plate he brings to the table.More

Wow. This is an experience not to miss. Loved Noam's very creative, beautiful, well-planned and crafted courses. Truly as good as I've had at a few Michelin rated restaurants. And what a delight to dine outside in a (covered) "jungle" setting, meeting other couples, and...getting to know Noam. Loved that Noam reached out prior to dining to assess and accommodate dietary preferences, in my case a whole-food, plant based diet. Dishes based on local produce and some unique, home-grown ingredients that were a delight to sample.More

Located in the woods a half hour out of Tamarindo, Noam Kostucki presides over the culinary experience of a lifetime. Noam is Polish Jewish, grew up in Belgium and has lived in many parts of the world, now in Costa Rica for nine years. Her...culinary skills are self-taught and they are extraordinary. The meal is a seven course tasting menu served over about three hours. Noam dos the cooking and service all by herself. There are a maximum of twelve guests at a communal table but, in low season, there were only four of us last night. This experience is worth a journey and Noam's charm is beyond compare.More

As so many other reviewers have commented, the dining experience at HiR is so much more than incredible food. Trying to capture this in mere words is almost impossible however…… We came to celebrate our 45th at Noam’s table and were her only guests that...evening. The ultimate definition of intimate dining elevated by the sounds of howler monkeys and cicadas as the night fell was absolute magic. Noam’s imagination and execution of every morsel put in front of you is truly remarkable, but even more is is the fact that she is cooking, eating and conversing with you all evening long. Where have you ever had a chef be this involved in your meal? And this is what makes HiR exceptional, and why you should go if you are fortunate enough to be in Guancaste. Conversation around the kitchen table is something familiar and essential to our relationship with food and the people we share it with and love. Somehow Noam invokes this in her home with guests night after night. Thank you.More

We have been blessed to have been able to dine at three of the restaurants listed in the World's Top 50 list - and this was better than all but one. Noam's jewel in the jungle should not be considered as just a great meal...- it really is much more than that. Being able to sit on the porch of someone's home receiving a culinary experience from the heart is something we will cherish forever. What you will be receiving here is a delicious mixture of flavors, textures, ingredients, family history and, most importantly, love. Noam infuses her personal history spanning numerous countries and continents into her adopted home in this Costa Rican jungle setting. The food is extremely fresh - often from places in her garden that she points out while describing each course - and the recipes imaginative with each bite bringing silence to the table as everyone savors the often never-before-tasted combinations of deliciousness. The only meal we've had that has been better was at Central in Lima (listed as number 2 of the World's Top 50) and that restaurant had dozens of people in the kitchen and a bunch of servers. HiR Fine Dining has only 1 person - Noam. By the end of the meal, you feel you have a deep understanding of her life from childhood in Europe with mixed heritage (Belgian/Polish/Israeli) and the ways in which her love of family and personal history informs each of the courses. To simply call them courses do them a disservice as each course has multiple parts and complexity to it - almost like movements within a symphonic concerto. By the end of the meal, you will never look at traditional foods the same because of how Noam has reimagined dishes from our collective pasts in new, exciting and delicious ways. Because of how open and descriptive Noam is with her own history in the building and explaining of the dishes, it allows us to also go back to our own relationships with food as we were growing up - regardless of where in the world that was. That alone is a huge bit of Noam's magic. At one point, our group reminisced about watching our parents cook when we were children - which brought even more poignancy to the fact that there's a little ledge you can stand on to peer into the kitchen and see what Noam is up to throughout the cooking process. The mere act of stepping up to look through the window brings us physically back to our childhood. All-in, the evening was magical for everyone and something that I don't know if we'll ever be able to experience again - especially as we're not assured of returning to this corner of Costa Rica. For that reason and the fact that the food is simply phenomenal, HiR Fine Dining is a can't miss experience.More

Diner at Noam was a magical experience in the middle of the jungle with amazing sounds and vibrations :) Her warm welcome make us feel at ease and the communal table makes it much more enjoyable as you have to socialise and get to know...people who you never met before. The food was fantastic and the stories behind every dish is definitely a plus. Really unusual combination but the result was just a delish :) I would highly recommend to anyone to experience her energy and passion. Also I love that the meal starts early and finish early I definitely don’t like to eat late and yawn by the end of the meal.More

Hi Richard, dinners are NOT $250 like you wrote in your review, but $145. The price is the same for seafood, vegetarian or vegan dinners.
