After 3 weeks of restaurants in Greece, including one Michelin starred in Athens, this is the best one by a fair margin. Simple local dishes but excellent quality - we had stuffed eggplant, dolmades, grilled lamb and snails... all very good. And the waiter Dmitry...made us laugh and gave good advice. If you are in Heraklion, highly recommended!More

The best place in Crete. It’s really worth to rent a car and go 25km inland just to deep down into real creten cuisine. Dimitri is an awosome service man. Friendly advose: try everything. Really. Very reasonable procce - u can handle it.

Wonderful hospitable hosts and SUPER DELICIOUS FOOD! Traditional Cretan cuisine all homemade and all good! We had the herb pies, okra and tomatoes, lamb stewed in wine, dessert of yogurt and fruit preserves and a crystallized apple. Yum yum yum! The wine is also homemade...and delicious. This is a true gem. Go out of your way to visit this true Cretan Taverna...you will be glad you did! They have won awards for their cuisine also!More

We visited "Taverna Onisimos" on our way back from Elafonisi. Our friend's parents grew up in the next town over, so she recommended the Taverna. We arrived to the Taverna earlier in the evening, before the dinner crowds. The owners, a wife and husband team,...greeted us and gave us a tour of the Taverna, which opened about 15 years ago after being rebuilt by the owners. The interior has a very homely feeling and has memorabilia of the owner's dad. The wife is in charge of running the kitchen using her family recipes, while the husband procures produce from local sources and makes the excellent house wine. All dishes are lovingly prepared by the wife, who stays after the Taverna closes to prepare some menu items for the next day. Everything we had in our party of four was outstanding. It truly demonstrated the variety and richness of Cretan cuisine. The menu is in Greek, but there is an english menu with pictures. Everything we ordered was delicious! Our appetizers were tasty dolmadakia (grape leaves and pumpkin flowers!) filled with rice and herbs, house salad (garden vegetables seasoned with herbs) and a delicious Cretan cream cheese. Our entrees were the most delicious baked feta cheese in tomato sauce, goat meat stew in tomato accompanied with rice prepared with stock from goat meat (this dish was the winner!), and grilled lamb chops. As if all this was not enough, we were treated to the most wonderful dessert sampler, which included crystalized bergamot orange, Cretan cheese with fruit preserves, both sweet and sour cheese pastries, raki (Cretan wine), bergamot liquor and a fresh fruit platter. Taverna Onisimos was hands down the best restaurant we visited in Crete and Greece, and our dinner there was the highlight of our trip. We will fondly remember meeting the owners and look forward to return to the Taverna again. We highly recommend it.More

What a find. Very traditional, food Devine, lovely hospitality, even with the language barrier. Nothing was too much trouble. Exceptionally clean establishment and would recommend if you want to go off the beaten track.

One of the best meals we had while in Crete. Delicious traditional and home-made dishes! Spectacular goat in tomato sauce, stuffed zucchini flowers and gamopilafo (cretan pilaf). The owner is really helpful and you should listen to his advice when ordering! When you ask for...the bill they will bring you some watermelon, yogurt with grape "spoon sweet" and a couple other small plates of traditional greek sweets. This place is a must!More

Owner dont speak english - menu with pictures. No clients/tourists at 3 pm - strange but nice view :-). Greek salad super fresh - the best maybe, lot of onion and cucumber. French fries very good. Lamb in tomato or grilled very, very good. Good...dolmades. Grilled menu ok. Nice wine. Prices average. Nice time.More

Very polite and friendly service that end up with very very very tasty dices. From the salad to meat and from cheese to fries. The desert was also perfect and I have to mention that all the raki that we ordered was on the house...(and we had too much). I will go there again for sure.More

We were in this taverna,a big group of people arond 120 prs for a business dinner. Despite the fact of a big crowd the food ,service and hospitality was perfect. The lamb cooked in traditional way was delicuos and every thing that they have served...was home made taste: cooked in details with care and love. For vegetarian people the food was very good as well. Even the house wine was great. If you go in crete will be a pity to not try this place. Go for it 😉More

This is fantastic restaurant! We came as a group and were served so many delicious traditional Cretan dishes! The best one was caramelized in honey orange, never had anything so sweet and lightly bitter leaving wonderful aftertaste in the mouth.
