About
The Fonte alla Vena Inn is a warm and welcoming restaurant in an ancient building of historical importance which has recently been renovated. It is on the Cassia Road, close to the village of San Quirico d'Orcia close to Montalcino , Motepulciano and only 4 km from Bagno Vignoni well known for its hot springs The restaurant used to be an inn where " knights" would stop to eat, drink, sleep and let their horses drink. The building in front of the inn was a furnace where the famous Chigean pottery was baked. This has lent its name to the restaurant. The restaurant is run by owner Luciano who give the guests a warm and friendly welcome. At the end of the meal, guests are invited to leave their comments and suggestions in the guest book, which will be used to continually improve the quality of the restaurant.

This was my second time at this restaurant and I will definitely be back! Great food and service- sat outside and watched the cars go by!

We had a good dinner here. To start we were a bit startled to be instructed to download the menu via a QR-code. When we said that we preferred to be off-line for dinner, we readily received old fashioned menus. We both had meat dishes, which were well prepared and tasty. The wine list is interesting and has some reasonably priced wines, amongst more expensive ones. We enjoyed our meal here and would recommend this restaurant.

We dined here for lunch on a Thursday. Menu was quite comprehensive with a good selection of dishes across the board - antipasti, primi, secondi, contorni and dolce.
There were a couple of different interior dining rooms as well as an outside terrace. We chose one of the interior areas as it was very hot outside.
As entrees we had the peach with sheep ricotta cheese, mint and basil and the roast pork belly cream and brine cauliflower. For mains we both had tagliata with sides of roast potatoes and green beans. All of the dishes were very tasty particularly the tagliata. Our dessert, milk mousse with crumble and red fruits, was similarly good.
Wine list was extensive. We ordered a 2016 bottle of Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montelpuciano for Euro40. Our waiter opened it, smelt the cork and said that it was corked and whisked it away before we had a chance to test this for ourselves. He returned shortly thereafter with another bottle and it was sometime later that I realised that it was a 2019, not a 2016. A perusal of the bill showed that they had charged the same price as the 2016. I would like to think our waiter was really on the ball though would have preferred for him to give us the option of testing the wine for ourselves.
Service otherwise, was very good.
One small point was when I went to the bathrooms I found the toilet seat hanging off its hinges which is not a great look for a Michelin rated restaurant.

Food is phenomenal, but their service really sets them apart. Luciano went way out of his way to make our experience special. And then Federico was fantastic: extremely personable, professional, and knowledgeable. We also found the value to be excellent here - food is fairly priced and we perceived their mark-up on alcohol to be extremely low. Highly recommended!

The booking process is easy due to an online reservation system. The same day booking was confirmed within two hours. You’re provided both by email and WhatsApp with the food and beverage menus and directions for parking within the vicinity.
The service is good and very friendly.
Our table having to scan the menus from QR-Codes, while another table later received printed menus, was the only thing that stood out to me. Water and three different types of bread were provided as soon as possible. The food was delivered in a timely manner.
We were sat outside on the terrace next to the kitchen window. Kitchen noise was audible, but neither the noise nor any smells, of which none were present, were unpleasant. The lighting was very harsh though and could have been more indirect. Perhaps a table light or candle could help.
The restaurant offers a good take on local cuisine and items not commonly found such as snails and veal sweetbreads. A broad and good selection of wines is provided.

We booked a table for lunch and were so impressed by the cuisine and service that decided to have dinner the next evening. Everything we tried was amazing, especially the carpaccio and the fresh anchovies. Ask for a truffle pasta which is not on the menu, but they can prepare it and it is delicious.

Delicious food, Tuscan specialities, friendly staff. Many of the restaurants in town cater to the tourist trade, ie they don't care because they don't have to. You will be gone tomorrow and there will be more unsuspecting diners waiting to take your place. The Fonte alla Vena clearly cares about their cuisine and how they treat their guests. The food is wonderful. Don't miss it.

This was the top surprise on our annual Montepulciano visit. Tuscan with a twist. The pasta of the day was a show stopper and the Sweet Breads done in a very creative fashion. The later was so good we ordered a second one. The owner and entire staff (shout out to Guilia) were friendly and helpful. This is now on our must visit list for next year. Also had the best appropriate music. Must reserve.

Fonte alla Vena is very accessible, right next to the San Quirico turn-off from the SR2 main road, but if you're concentrating on the traffic, also very easy to drive straight past! And it's definitely worth the effort to stop, with good food, and very friendly and knowledgeable staff. I had Tuscan onion soup ('cucina povere' style, with lots of bread mushed in), followed by deer stew with sweet wine. Even the veggie options sounded so interesting, my carnivore wife chose them (thistle flan with ricotta and onion cream, followed by pasta with blue goat's cheese, saffron and walnut). A good wine list (especially local, naturally!), and the prices were very reasonable for the level of quality. We look forward to a return visit!

Made a dinner reservation for 2 a month in advance for late October. The restuarant was clean and cozy. Servers were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Menu has a great assortment of unique, traditional, and classic dishes. Portions are good, also the primi pastas could be shared between two people. Great wine list and the sommelier was very helpful and professional. Food was as expected. Give this place a try, even if you have to drive a bit.

We had two meals here in December — a lunch and a dinner. The service was excellent and the food truly delicious. Simple, traditional Tuscan food executed really well, with quality ingredients. We can’t wait to go back.

Nothing but good to say. I had started with the steak tartare which was different than what I’m used to ( looked like a hamburger) but it was very tasty. For our entrée we had Pasta with blue cheese and pasta a la carbonara. These were exceptionally great and we had an awesome night. Especially paired with the great wine the sommelier had suggested. Round it out with a panfort that was made in-house and they is then a desert wine. Sweet dreams, lights out!

One of the best dinners we’ve had in Italy! Simple, elegant, but cozy setting right outside San Quirico old city. Delicious lamb, really knockout pasta and this incredible cream dessert (not quite panna cotta) with toffee topping and shaved, bitter chocolate. I’m still dreaming about it! Friendly, younger, professional staff. A treasure and a pleasure. Just go!

Not the first time here but our recent visit has been a delusion. The quality of food is way low compare to the prices. Pasta were nice, but the second dish such as meats were not ok. Desserts are the most disappointed ones. The chocolate walnut cake was apparently gone bad. Good side: the service are good.

We had a great time at Fonte alla Vena. Our eight year old son loved the Pappardelle al sugo toscano and said he would definitely go back. The restaurant is very nice, as well as the service and the food. I particularly loved the Tartare.
