Grundarfjordur offers very little choice of restaurants. Therefor it was a very nice surprise to find such an excellent restaurant in this tiny village. They offer original Icelandic food with great service. After our main course we were invited to take our dessert and coffee...in the upstairs parlor. It was like stepping into my grandmothers parlor, very quaint! Definitely recommend this place for a great experience. Oh and let’s not forget the breathtaking view of Kirkjufell from the restaurant.More

We were a little disappointed. The restaurant itself is beautiful and typically Icelandic, looking over the bay it has fantastic views. When we arrived there was a wedding party of around 20 people who were of course very noisy. We couldn't hear ourselves talk. It...did ruin our evening. We were hoping for a quiet evening tasting the delicious food on the menu. I just felt that we weren't important to the staff (rather condescending) and more interested in the big wedding party who were obviously spending a lot of money. It is an expensive restaurant and we just felt let down by the service. The food was however excellent.More

This was easily the best meal we had in Iceland (and we had a number of excellent meals). The setting was beautiful with s view of Kirkjufell. The staff was wonderful snd explained the options and gold-medal winning appetizer. We had the fried redfish skin...and seaweed appetizer, the redfish main and a bread pudding dessert. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented.More

Lovely place just by the shore. The food was delicious. We took the 5 course menu. One with the meat and one with the fish. Both where excellent! Good selection of beer also. The view is also beautiful. The staff was very friendly.

Went for the tasting menu, believe everything is locally sourced. The foal was unbelievable and the smoked puffin was interesting and one of the few places that offered it. Service and personnel welcoming and entertaining. View of the mountain in front of the town made...everything better. Must goMore

One of only a few restaurants in town. Stopped by and they were full for the day, so we made reservations for the following day. (Reservations a must!). So glad we did. What a wonderful dining experience. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting. Staff...very friendly and kind. The food - excellent! Unique dishes using local foods. Definitely more on the side of fine dining. What really made this experience memorable (as if the food hadn't already!) was the picturesque view across the water of Kirkjufell Mountain while we dined. A lovely restaurant. Highly recommended. Don't forget to make a reservation!More

What a lovely place - the setting was tucked away in the fishing town & it was a perfect little spot. The decor was so nice, the people and service was excellent…and the food was so tasty! The soup of the day, meat & catch...of the day were culinary masterpieces! I’d recommend this place for sure!More

This was one of the best meals I've had in Iceland! We were staying in Grundarfjorour for my birthday so I was lucky enough to celebrate at Bjargarsteinn mathus. We didn't have a reservation, but we went soon after opening to put our name on...the list and they were able to fit us in later in the night. I would recommend a reservation though as the restaurant was full all night! I had a delicious steak, which was giant, and a chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert. They even wrapped our leftovers in foil shaped like swans! It's worth a visit here for the food alone, but the service made the experience extra special.More

Off-season restaurant options in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula are fairly limited, so we were delighted to come across this cozy restaurant that was a nice mix of locals and tourists in late October. The menu isn't extensive, but offered interesting vegan, fish, and meat dishes to...please a group. It isn't cheap, but we spent $160 for two people including 4 drinks, dessert, appetizers, and two meals and I thought it was worth every penny. Service was wonderful and responsive!More

Bjargarstein Mathus is a brilliant restaurant - which was conveniently located next to our accommodation. First off, we were 13-14 minutes late for our reservation. But the bald man at the bar was excellent about it and had us quickly seated. For drinks, the bald...man guided myself and my friends through alcoholic options - ensuring to match our preferences with what was available. Even giving us the option to sample drinks before we committed to any one. What followed were helpful explanations about food and recommendations made by the two waitresses. The seafood soup (lobster bisque??) is extremely delicious. Our group of six would highly recommend it - we came back the next day so that everyone could order seafood soups! Though on the second day it was noticeably less good being thinner/less unctuous - which we fixed by adding salt and butter until it was just like the first seafood soup we had. We think this would be a better addition to the five course menu, compared to the other starter items which it comprises of. The five course meal is excellent. We thought the seafood five course (specifically catch of the day) was better than the lamb five course one - we felt the lamb course could have done with a touch of vinegar to brighten the flavour. When we came back the next day, almost all of our entourage ordered catch of the day. That was how impressed we were with it. Also excellent were the beefsteak special and the lamb steak. Finally, the pumpkin pie and cinnamon ice cream dessert - part of the five course meal - was delectable. Myself and my friend are not typically fans of cinnamon. But wow, that homemade cinnamon ice cream is something special. 5/5 restaurant experience - anyone in the area who lives to eat must check Bjargarstein Mathus out.More
