When exploring the tunnel we saw the sign for mulled wine and shared platters. What a great idea on a misty wintry day. Friendly welcoming staff. Mulled wine yummy. Platter amazing. Presentation 5 star. Will visit again. Highly recommended.

Been twice this month. It's a great halfway meet up place in between Auckland & Papamoa. Met up there with friends to have a pleasant winters lunch. Great outdoors area for the kids to explore. No nonsense menu that had great tasting food. Good wine selection with helpful & friendly staff. An all age venue.

Near the cycling track so good location. Staff friendly but not very argent service. Food was okay (bread was quite doughy) but they forgot to bring some of what we'd ordered... Didn't get charged for it, though.

By very good fortune the Talisman cafe at the bottom of the hill was closed, and this encouraged us to drive up to the East European style winery. Mein host, Horst Hillerich, has established this winery which producessome of the finest whites on this Planet. Our food and wine purchases came to $NZ 222.80, so come well prepared for one... More

Only tried the Chardonnay, but it was fantastic so brought another 2 bottles for cellaring. The Platter was amazing and plentiful. All other food coming out seemed well presented, and other guests seemed to be enjoying themselves. The owner was friendly with a good sense of humour. Worth going for a walk through the 1km old train tunnel, situated 200m... More

This is a 'must stop' along the Hauraki Rail Trail (hard to find though. Entrance is after the bridge but before the tunnel if you are coming from Paeroa). All of the food was amazing, we had seafood chowder (Devine) beef ribs (delicious) meat and cheese platter (huge), chocolate mousse (OMG...yummy) and wonderful wines. The chef makes all the food... A meal with a twist, beef short ribs with figs port and blue cheese sitting amongst a selection of kumara pumpkin onions that appear to be roasted.? Beautiful flavours washed down with a rose wine called the " naked Rosie "

Description
The Estate is in the heart of the Karangahake Gorge. It is only 200 meters from the tunnel portal of the main walking/cycle trail and has its own access from there. It could not be easier. The Karangahake end of the Gorge offers fantastic tracks, many of them loops of differing lengths. There is a huge amount of history and scenic attraction in the area and the winery and restaurant are a well-deserved treat. Karyn, the chef, prepares wonderful gourmet food, which complements Horst's lovely range of wines. The summer garden setting is relaxed and peaceful and a wonderful interlude between walking or biking. In winter there is an open fire. Platters, full or light meals are available
