Paused in Espelette, like a lot of others, during a day of driving through French Basque country, starting in Landes, near Dax, up the foothills to Espelette, later down to St Jean de Luz. In a group of seven people who had been sharing near-Hemingway amounts of wine, pastis, and food for the previous days. Broke for lunch here, found... More

Visiting this Basque village , famous for its air dried red chillies , to be seen and purchased all around the village were struggling to find food that whet the appetite in the local restaurants. Came across this place and found the menu board inviting. The staff were well up to their jobs and were attentive without being pushy ,... More

We stopped here for lunch whilst wandering round Espelette. We'd been wanting to try the local veal and pepper stew called Axoa. This restaurant had it as one of their mains on the 20 euro menu. We both started with the plate of cold meats and pate which was very nice and also both choose the veal Axoa for main.... More

Aintzina is a good restaurant serving going local food. Its specialities are all good local food. This is a busy restaurant that quickly fills up. Quite a lot of seating inside. Wise to reserve or arrive right on noon or you may miss out.

We stumbled in this restaurant in the pretty village of Espelette in the French Basque country side. It was the beginning of April and the place was packed with mostly locals which is always a good indicator of a good restaurants offering good value for money. I had the 'plat du jour' which was a delicious pork dish and my... More

You feel welcome in this restaurant. The young waiter was very polite, friendly and fast. We had just one dish each: salade chevre chaude and st. Jaques pasta. Good taste, huge portions. Gateau basque and ice cream for desert. With two kir coctails to start, small bottle of local red wine and two coffees, altogether a little over 60 euros,... More

we rode our bikes from Saint jean de luz passing through Sare and Ainhoa, which are really cute towns too. We wanted to eat and then head back. We didn't really understand the menu so my husband took one of the mixed plates of Basque food and it was delicious and so nicely displayed in little dishes. I had the... More

This is a simple local restaurant, but the food is of excellent quality and it is somewhere you will see the locals eating, which is always a good sign.

I went there today during my holidays, and I can say it was really good. This is local cuisine, and I ordered the €20 menu with the tuna terrine, the Axoa (veal meat with pepper, onions served with roasted potatoes) and a blueberry tart. That was really good in quality AND in quantity. A good Red wine Graves (Bordeaux) to... More
