About
Hidden away in the quaint Algarve village of Porches, Porches Velho is worth seeking out for high quality food and a secluded country setting looking out to the Monchique Mountains. Housed in a 210-year-old wine cellar, Porches Velho has retained original features in the open plan dining room, including the wooden beams criss-crossing the 5-metre-high ceiling and the latticed windows that fill the room with the beautiful sunlight of the Algarve. The terrace is a splendid place to dine in the summer, whilst the wood fire in the hearth keeps the dining room warm in the winter. Surrounded by rustic farm tools and the huge aquarium of brightly coloured fish, you can enjoy a menu rich in Portuguese specialities, all prepared with quality produce and crafted by owner Sr. Candeias, who successfully fronted the renowned A Lanterna restaurant in Parchal for 25 years. Fresh, not farmed, the fish served at Porches Velho includes Smoked Swordfish. You can also try the popular Medallions of Black Pork with chestnuts and sweet potatoes, as well as Rabbit, Fish Cataplana and succulent steaks. There is a range of traditional desserts and all dishes can be complemented by a selection from the Portuguese wine list, offering something from all areas of the country. Friday night is Fado Night at Porches Velho and this is the most entertaining time to dine, with traditional, soulful Portuguese music playing whilst you enjoy your meal. Private and spacious with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, Porches Velho is an ideal venue for groups and celebrations and has hosted several successful wedding receptions.

Porches Velho is a genuine Portuguese restaurant with large dining room in an old wine cellar that is over 200 years old. During our four and a half weeks stay at Amendoeira Golf Resort in Alcantarilha we had two dinners here. On the first time I came here with my wife to make sure that the restaurant is a convenient place to celebrate our friend’s birthday (70 years) a few days later. My starter was Fried shrimps in olive oil with garlic and piripiri. My wife ordered Mackerel fillets marinated Algarvian style. Both of us ordered Lamb shank from the Specialities menu for mains. It was tender and melted in our mouths. Our desserts were Almond cake and Orange cake. Everything was so delicious that without any doubt Porches Velho was chosen as the birthday venue. The birthday hero and two other friends joined us for the birthday party. We started with a bottle of good Portuguese sparkling wine. Based on our previous visit our recommendation for the mains was Lamb shank. The day hero followed our suggestion. She liked Lamb shank very much. The others chose the Octopus dish from the Specialities menu. The dishes were accompanied with excellent red wine Adega Mayor Reserva from Alentejo. All five of us were unanimous in the choice of desserts. We chose Orange tart. Every dish was tasty, fresh and cooked to perfection. Our second visit was just as enjoyable as the first. Porches Velho is a restaurant with delicious food, good wines, great ambience with white walls, beautiful decor and a wood fire and one of most attentive services we have met in the Algarve. Highly recommended!

We joined two friends for Valentine's day and expected to pay a premium. The menu was their normal choice which was excellent. A very wide range of Portuguese and International dishes with the Michelin star vibe. The food was serrved on very hot plates and sent back empty by everyone. The Service was attentive but not imposing. A venue we will be returning to which has now become "our first choice favourite for special meals"

I went to the restaurant with my fiancé on the last week of July 2021. We were welcomed by a very kind waiter who let us stay outside at a very romantic table where you can see a little bit of landscape. My fiancé doesn’t eat fish so she ordered beef with potatoes. I took a shrimp cocktail and a sea bream with rice and vegetables. The food tasted really really really (x10) good and we really enjoyed our dinner. The waiter always came to our table to pour our water and to ask us if everything was ok. We also ordered a cake as dessert and enjoyed it. We paid €62 approximately without wine. Although the price was a little bit higher than expected (approximately 8 euro of cover charge) and the cover charge was billed to us without explicit requirement, I would definitely come back for one more dinner. Really good atmosfere, really good food and really kind people.

Is it a wise decision to visit the very same restaurant several times while on vacation at the Algarve coast? I mean, you can try out so many restaurants in this region that are really worthwhile to go. However, while trying out those other restaurants, my wife and me decided to take 4 dinners at Amandio Candeias’ “Porches Velho”. And we were offered the very best dishes you can get in southern Portugal. No matter if seafood, meat or fish – all meals were perfectly cooked and tasted extraordinary great. “Marvilhoso” was the most often used word we chose to express our fascination with the gastronomic performance of Amandio and his team. Our strategy with the menu was to select each time meals we haven’t tried out before, and we were never disappointed. Here are our favorites: as starters we highly recommend the Octopus Carpaccio, the Mussels à Bolhao Pato and the Fish Soup. As main dish don’t miss the Cataplana, the John Dory fish with orange sauce and Pork meat Alentejo style. As dessert explore the sensational Orange Pudding (which I ordered twice, thus traversing our own strategy). And please trust the waiter’s wine recommendations that will fit best to your dish of choice. Make a reservation in advance and take time to chat with Amandio and the waiters. They are attentive, friendly and happy to safely host guests after the long lockdown due to Corona. We already miss them.

Located in the village of Porches, which is worth a stroll around, this restaurant serves delicious Portuguese dishes. The atmosphere is excellent in this old building including the terrace. The inside of this former tall wine cellar still has the original roof, resulting in a warm ambience. The service by the owner and his team is excellent and rounds up a great local dining experience.

We recently ate here on a family trip to Portugal and had a wonderful meal in a friendly, traditional Portuguese restaurant. The restaurant is decorated in a very traditional Portugueses style and feels incredibly authentic. We were seated in a lovely outdoor courtyard overlooking Porches village. All of the staff were very friendly and spoke great English. They were clearly passionate about the food on the menu and offered helpful suggestions. We had two vegans in our group and a coeliac and these dietary needs were catered for without issue. I had the gazpacho and the chickpea and spinach curry, both of which tasted amazing. They were full of flavour despite the simplicity of the dishes and everything was perfectly cooked. The rest of the group all really enjoyed their meals as well and everyone had a wonderful evening in a great location. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend eating at Porches Velho, which features a small menu crafted with authentic Portuguese dishes. Lovely dining room which was a former wine cellar, and also an outdoor terrace, weather permitting. Absolutely loved the codfish a brais, Grilled prawns with piri piri sauce, sirloin steak , and delicious seafood stew ! Genuine hospitality provided by Cashius & Victor, delightful fellows. And don’t miss out on the fine dessert cart to end your night. Located in a quiet street in town, well worth the visit & Reasonably priced. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lovely Portuguese restaurant tucked away down a cobbled street. Good range of delicious food (mackerel starter and roasted fish main were great). Whilst they don’t have a gluten-free menu, they do know what dishes contain gluten and can advise accordingly. They speak really good English (and, I suspect, French and German). Great for an evening meal.

It is a few years since we have been at this restaurant - same owner for the last 19 years. Years ago it was excellent and it still has the same high standards of food and service. It serves traditional Portuguese food - one will not be disappointed.

My wife and I had dinner here in August 2022. We were staying at Vilalara in Porches a short drive away. She had tiger prawns and I the veal shanks special both of which were outstanding. Wine and deserts also very good. Very reasonable prices even though there were separate charges for bread, water and small service fee. Indoor or rear patio great atmosphere. Wonderful service.

Booked this restaurant for Thursday 23 September while sitting on the plane 24 hours earlier. Quickly confirmed and efficiently dealt with. Arrived about fifteen minutes early and shown to table (6) where service was excellent. A number of us went for the shrimps starter and the lamb shank for mains. Very pleasant sweets all round . Summarising, we were really pleased with our meals which were at a decent price. Recommended.

Great ambiance and a wonderful host. Delicious food and a good house wine. The only disappointment is that they advertise Fado on Friday nights but there was none on the night we went and that was the reason we chose this restaurant.
