Nice for a cold beer and sunbeds during the day. The food itself is nothing special but not bad either. Sad to see Russian people throwing rocks at dogs in this place and no one from the staff seemed to care about it. That would be the main reason for my 3* instead of 4. Hope you can start helping protect animals and the environment. They also allow local people with wild caught monkeys on a leash to come in for pictures with tourists which I find unacceptable. Animal abuse is a big no.

We had our first meal on arriving in Unawatuna here,it was nice to sit right on the beach and there was some gentle music in the background. We had a chicken curry and chicken fried rice both were tasty with lots of nice chicken pieces and big portions but not special enough for us to return.

Largish portions of uninteresting food, no wonder there were lot of table still available when the nearby restaurants were full.

We spend the afternoon on the sunbeds which are greatly located. Don't waste your time with the food though as it is tastless and not of great quality. We had four dishes there (burgers, prawns, pizza and vegetable kotu) - none of which was good.

We used there beach beds on about 4 occasions and had lunch twice
Overall a good experience and the food was perfectly reasonable. Service was fine
Staff were generally willing and could be encouraged to smile fairly easily

I spent a morning here using a sunbed and buying their drinks. At lunch time, having just ordered food, a group of 6 walked along the beach... I've never seen anything like it... the staff were up off their seats, arranging beds and umbrellas for this group, (acting like god had arrived)... and suddenly I was pushed aside and my umbrella moved to accommodate the group. When I queried it I was told, in no uncertain terms, to sit somewhere else! I was tempted to cancel the food and eat somewhere else but tried to rise above it. It was clear that my custom meant little to them and the treatment I'd received left a bitter taste but I will try to remain objective about the food...
The grilled prawns were more like garlic prawns or curried prawns, not simply grilled as you might expect but smothered in sauce. I think this seems normal in Sri Lanka though, and it was tasty enough, although quite expensive. They were small prawns, not the king prawns that you peel yourself.
When it came to getting the bill, the waiter who had NOT been rude to me was busy sitting, chatting to a young female customer, so again I felt my custom was of no interest!
The Sri Lankan people have been lovely until now and it's a shame that the staff here are so short sighted that they have missed the fact that I'm a potential customer, twice a day, every day (and not always alone) for the next 2 months, compared to a group of 6 who may be here a week!
Samaya Beach restaurant a couple of doors away is much friendlier!

We had lunch here one day after spending the day on the beach. It was accectable although was a little difficult getting exactly what we had ordered. we decided to visit again for Dinner the next day as is a nice location. We ordered from the main menu and specifically asked for no saald or garnish with both meals. Both meals arrive with Salad...we asked for it to be removed...it came back still with a garnish...we said no salad...the waiter removed it from our plates with his hands in a very rude manner..what can I say other than this man was the only rude person we met in our 19 Days in Sri Lanka ...do not go to the coral light.

The hamburger is a joke, about 10 grams of meat and terrible taste. The waitress gave me a small bottle of water when I paid for a big, when I complained he said that it was the only one that was cold and I still need to pay the same price as for a big one.

If you will be in Unawatuna don't miss this place as it has most delicious tom yum soup I've ever tried, really and it's also not expensive, just about 400 rupees per cup! We came here every day for that soup! Butter prawns are also very tasty, you'll get big portion with french fries and cheeps in addition. Once we took a full fish here but it was a little bit dry.

The importation of five shiploads of Indian sand has transformed Unawatuna beach, so restaurants at the west end are no longer being eaten away by the sea, and you can wallow in acres of sunbeds and umbrellas. Coral Light has benefitted from this, and they have used the extra space to make a more spacious eating area. The food is mostly standard Sri Lanka beach fare, well cooked and reasonably priced. The star dish for us is Tom Yam soup with rice, which is distinctly better than you might expect, and excellent value to boot.
It's family run, has been around for ever and the service is more reliable than most of the beach joints. It's usually much quieter than Hot Rock next door, which is a plus point for us!

Visited this place around 6.30pm. We were the only two people there eating and to be honest the service was pretty poor. The food was just ok. My wife's chicken dish was pretty good but my burger was terrible. It tasted a little funny that when I looked it was as though there were two slices of hogs pudding in the bun and not a patty. The wait for food was long, and it seemed as though we were disturbing the lady who was serving when we wanted service. The coconut pancakes and the ice cream had a 15 minute gap between them so we were left with slop. We intended to split the two deserts. Also we didn't get asked if we wanted more drinks. Finally we got the bill and the fastest I saw the lady move was when she was coming to collect the money. I really wouldn't bother with the western menu. Stick to rice and curry.
