The best place to have dinner on the beach without doubt

The best place to have dinner on the beach without doubt. Very nice relaxed feel with the sand between your toes, very well presented with subtle lighting and chilled background music. Despite the fact that it is such a lovely looking place it is very reasonably and similarly priced to others along the beach. The sea food is very popular tuna, whole fish, king and tiger prawns, lobster .. it is all here, is caught daily and sells briskly so is always fresh. The tuna is perfectly cooked and amazing! There are plenty of other options on the menu to choose from in a range of cuisine. I would recommend the Sri Lankan curry which comes in 5 varied dishes tapas style and spiced to suit any palate. But without doubt one of the most endearing features of Thaproban are the staff, most of which have worked here for years. Always a very warm welcome, attentive and make the whole experience a lovely evening. Well done to the team, you continue to excel! The only downside of Thaproban is it's so good you may not try many other places. We just keep going back and love it. Dine here and enjoy.

Great atmosphere and good fresh food

Good choice of fresh fish and seafood. Our choices were really fresh, cooked well and served with tasty garlic rice and a small salad portion. Service was efficient and friendly.

Perfect place for dinner in the beach

We weren't staying at the hotel, but we came to have dinner at the restaurant few times throughout our stay in Sri Lanka. Our group loved the food, and the staff were extremely helpful, starting with friendly welcome and seating, finishing with the suggestions for the food. Since some of our group does not like spicy food, we only had to mention that to the staff (waiter named Richy was our favorite - he was polite, helpful and friendly) and they would pick and suggest meals for us. The food and drinks were delicious, and the surroundings were super nice. We will recommend this restaurant for all our friends.

Terrible New Year's Dinner

Me and my couple went to Thaproban to enjoy a nice new year's dinner by the beach. Unfortunately nearly every place was only serving buffet dinners because of the new year's celebrations. We went to have a look at the food and it looked good and generous but when we tasted it everything was lacking flavor. Also, the price was super high compared to the general price level. Our buffet dinner cost 5000 rupees each...

Great Fresh Food, Lovely setting

Happened across this restaurant while walking along the beachfront. The food was so good we came back here for dinner 3 times in the week we were in Unawatuna. Beautiful setting right on the beach. Fresh fish and seafood, perfectly cooked, lots of choice on the menu and very reasonable prices. Friendly staff happy to help you. Definitely the best food we had in the area and highly recommend

Amazing !

We were staying in the hotel next to this restaurant for 2 nights only. The restaurant looked so inviting with a great atmosphere, we decide to eat here. My husband had the fish medley with which he commented"that was the best Tuna I've ever had". So we went again the following night, Chaminder warmly welcomed us again, remembered our drinks from the night before and after we had selected our "full fish" and jumbo prawns showed us to our ocean front table. Total bill with lion larger & 5 glasses of red wine was about £30. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in a heartbeat.

Best beachfront restaurant!

We have visited the last 4 evenings whilst staying in Unawatuna (for a total of 4 evenings) over the New Years period. We first came on New Year's Eve when we were wondering the beach with no reservation (and our hotel was particularly unhelpful...). Despite it being very busy, we immediately felt welcomed and our drinks were never empty. Over the past 4 evenings, we particularly enjoyed the amazing fresh seafood which was cooked perfectly and served with amazing crunchy chips and salad! We also tried the pizzas - all of which were amazing, our favourite was the Hawaiian with the amazing sweet local pineapple! The main reason why we kept coming back was because all the staff were so lovely and caring from remembering us and our drink of choice and nothing was ever too much trouble - always with a big smile! The two gentlemen who served us were always so kind and friendly and the restaurant manager is great! We loved it here (including the great music playing and the sound of the waves / sand between your toes)!! We can't wait to come back again!

Great venue.

Great seafood and fish, freshly caught that day. That's not overly surprising considering location but five stars comes from the amazing service. Friendly and helpful. The chef even made banana fritters and ice cream for my wife (not on menu) which genuinely was great with a light fluffy and crispy batter.

A beautiful restaurant on the beach with a few sunbeds and a wide range of dishes that would please anyone, including fresh and tasty fish. In the evening, you could get dinner at the waterfront. I was impressed by Kavindu, one guy in the staff that treated us kindly and family-like, from recommending us food to try and other beaches to visit to showing us a turtle he found on the beach that day. Needless to say, this was one of the best restaurants in Unawatuna, lunch and dinner too.

Lovely beach restaurant

As we were staying at the sister hotel (Thaproban Pavillion) we were able to use the sunbeds here. We had a few lunches, evening meals and drinks, good food, prices very reasonable. All the staff are friendly, we were mostly served by a young waiter Gihan, who was a very pleasant young man, saying that all the Sri Lankan people we met are extremely friendly.

This restaurant is superb. Lovely food - particularly the fish dishes which you select from a large fresh fish counter - and a lovely atmosphere due to the fact that it is always busy. The staff are extremely nice, attentive and professional particularly the manager, Viradha, and Priyantha who has been my partner’s waiter for 30 years. We come here most evenings for drinks and dinner and sit on the beach on their beds every day. Highly recommended. A cut above the rest.

A must visit restaurant at Unawatuna

We first came to this restaurant in 2019 before the pandemic and the food was excellent. We all went for a selection of their fresh seafood (Jumbo Prawns, Red Snapper, Calamari, Grouper) and enjoyed it so much we visited several times during that trip. After a couple of years of not being able to come away due to Covid, we have visited Sri Lanka again and have come to this beach side restaurant and the food is still as fantastic as we remember it. Our waiter for each time was Chaminda who gave us a warm welcome, was incredibly attentive, and polite every time we came. We will come here again and thoroughly recommend it.

Great seafood on the beach

We had 3 meals at this beach restaurant. The food was excellent, especially the grilled and crumb fried tiger prawns. The staff was very attentive, always ready with suggestions from the menu. The seafood was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was peaceful.. spend s few evenings sipping beer and watching the waves.

My first visit to Galle

Dropped by this place amidst an evening in drizzle. Was entertained by the waiter Indu. Indu is knowledgeable and explained to us clearly what seafood is available and how best it should be prepared. He gave us very recommendations and the food turned out fantastic and delicious. The Lion lager helped to wash down the food. Thaproban is lucky indeed to have an employee like Indu who is very friendly, helpful and customer focused. A highly recommended place to dine and chillax.

Super fresh and delicious food

We had a really nice evening at thaproban beach restaurant. The fish and seafood was very delicious which we could choose by ourself from the “market” in front of the restaurant. Bony was very attentive and super friendly during our stay! We could sit directly on the beach accompanied with nice music and lights.
