We had a lovely meal on a Sunday evening, and were glad they could fit us in with a late booking. We shared the duo of wild hare to start, and it was quite amazing. This was something new to me, and not at all what I'd expected. It was not at all "gamey." I then had the venison fillet,... More

This was our last restaurant dinner after spending 2 weeks traveling around the South Island - and it was the best! Very friendly good service and food to rave about. I had the lamb rack coated in manuka honey and mustard with a thyme jus- delist! My wife had the pork wrapped in bacon which was soft and flavoursome. The... More

This was our second visit and still has the best service. A lot of other establishments could learn a thing or two. The pork belt and salmon entrees were excellent. The lamb rake was nicely cooked. The venison however was cold and tough. The deserts were beautiful. The atmosphere is relaxing and we were not rushed at all. There was... More

Great tasting and attractively presented food. No. 31 was a delicious step up from the pub fare available in the township. The restaurant was quiet when we visited which made for a preciously intimate atmosphere. The staff were friendly and unobtrusive. The food itself was a tasty representation of New Zealand's great resources.

I normally dine here when in town. The food is good. Service acceptable. Did notice one waitress handled someone else's food with her hand over the food and probably touching it. That's instead of holding the dish on the side or underneath. Seemed wrong to me. It was a side dish of veggies I guess

Loved the lamb shank last time we dined at No 31. Memory was not wrong. Delicious, tender, succulent - all of the above coupled with mash, vegetables and lovely jus/gravy. Recommend.

Visiting from Melbourne, this was the best meal we had whilst holidaying in New Zealand. The Angus fillet was deliciously tender and flavoursome, best steak we have ever had! Thank you No. 31 for a memorable dining experience

31 is a wonderful restaurant, the quality of the food outstanding. Being game lovers we were delighted with the selection of hare, vension and duck on offer and our server was charming and gracious.

The former "Laurels" Restaurant re-opened its doors in May 2012, as "No.31 Restaurant & Bar", an A la Carte Restaurant specializing in modern European/New Zealand Cuisine. The restaurant is set in a quaint character cottage on the main street of Hanmer Springs. French doors open out to a lovely courtyard for alfresco dining and an outside bar leaner for pre-dinner drinks/cocktails in the warmer months. Inside the restaurant it is very homely, with an open fire, wooden floors and candle-lit tables. Award winning chef/owner, Michael van de Wiel ( previous chef/owner at "The Old Post Office Restaurant", Hanmer Springs, for 12 years). Fully Licensed and NOT BYO. Reservations Recommended.
