Authenticity is the key for us at the Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus™, and we strive to bring you the best in traditional German cuisine. Our menu includes various versions of Schnitzel, roasts, sausages, potato pancakes, brats and of course, German Gemütlichkeit. Our German owners make sure to only serve the best German beers and wines. The atmosphere at the Schnitzelhaus is like what Anna Maria Island is for Florida: Fun, laid back, simply “gemütlich”. Come hang out and enjoy yourself on one of the wooden tables or by enjoying a or two beers or wines at the bar. Schnitzelhaus is the “Wirtshaus” where you gather with your friends, your date or even your grandmother. Many German restaurants have been coming and going around Bradenton / Sarasota in the last 25 years. The Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus has been here ever since. We are under German / Austrian ownership. Everybody is welcome, all are encouraged to stay. We, the team of the Schnitzelhaus are preserving our tradition

We visited last week and were immediately warmly greeted by Gary. I would recommend having reservations, we were there on a Sunday and the restaurant is small and filled up quickly. The food was delicious. We started with sharing the potato pancakes and then had the Sauerbraten and Bier-Gulash. Each dish was served with spaetzle and red cabbage which were both delicious. We also had a side of sauerkraut which was also very good. After all that, we didn't have room for dessert, buth the strudel did look superb! We are definitely going to try to get back there.

Honestly, we decided to eat here because it was one of the few places on AMI that takes reservations and we were just not in the mood for a 1-2 hour wait that night. BEST decision ever!!! We were warmly greeted by the owner who immediately seated us and our waitress came right over. We were not super familiar with German food and they were awesome answering any questions we had. Our group had Jager schnitzel, traditional schnitzel and beef stroganoff. All the dishes were excellent, very flavorful and fresh. We enjoyed everything! We will definitely be eating here every trip.

Our family was on vacation to the Sarasota area and we spent the day out on Anna Maria. At the end of a long day we decided to look at Trip Advisor for a German restaurant as we wanted to try something different than seafood. Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus rated very high and we thought we would try it. We were greeted at the door by the owner, Gary, who was very welcoming to us! He showed us to our table and was very talkative and helpful with the menu. He believes in the food he serves and we were amazed by the delicious and generous portions that were served to us. We noticed that there were some regulars that came in as they obviously new about this gem of a restaurant. Gary treated everyone like a friend. My family was very happy about the authentic German menu, the taste, and the wonderful service. Also, don't forget to order the cappuccino which he said is German roasted coffee beans - best cappuccino I have ever had! Highly recommend!

Food portions were generous and the food is delicious but they are terribly understaffed. One person is taking orders, answering the phone and delivering food. I don’t know what has happened to the owner who used to greet everyone and make sure everything was okay. We were asked when we came in was if we had a reservation and were pointed to a table. Diners without a reservation were turned away even though multiple tables were available. The waiter didn’t write down our order and as a result got things wrong. The appetizer never came and people who arrived after us got their food 10 minutes before we did. After waiting 30 minutes we asked about our appetizer, the waiter said they bring things out when cooked. I think they forgot to put in the order. When the waiter came out with our entree about 15 minutes later, they indicated our appetizer was coming shortly. We said not to bother. What decent restaurant serves an appetizer after the main course! The desserts historically have been excellent, but the strudel was tasteless and cold. I took it home to heat up. When the check came we had to remind them they didn’t charge us for the beer. We’ve been coming here during our annual trip to AMI for over 10 years, but I think this will be our last visit to this restaurant. We had a similar experience last year but chalked it up to the pandemic disruption so many restaurants experienced, but most have recovered. Sadly, this one has not.

I've been coming here for some years now and the food taste and quality just isn't there anymore. The last time here was about a year ago and we ordered two orders of pork shanks. Came out semi warm and not cooked enough and very tough. Not wanting to complain we took them home . I just was here the other day and was so surprised to so only 1 server and a cook and the place that used to be packed with customers was almost empty. The food was barely ok, schnitzel was tough and not much flavor. It has so many mushrooms on it you couldn't see the cutlet. We are what we were given and they had no dessert to offer us. This just isn't good, this place at one time sold the best German food I've ever eaten. Now I won't go back or I would never recommend this place to anyone. The average schnitzel was about 24.00 and for that price it must be better. Not sure what happened to the old German owner but the quality has bottomed out since he left. Save your money...

This is a miserable excuse for a German restaurant. Used to be excellent, now it is an utter disappointment every time we have gone. Food tastes like it was made last week. Waitress very rude, and did not bring up extra charges associated with our choices. Can not substitute any sides, did not have certain dishes on the menu. Used to come every trip in the area, never coming back again. When the owner used to be there it was better, now the people in there do not care about the quality of experience or the food.

Went here for dinner last night because of all the great reviews? Not sure what all of you ate, but we were very disappointed! First off, for all of you that commented about the Owner being so wonderful and friendly, he no longer comes to the restaurant! In fact the Waitress/Bartender stated “Yea, he does not come in here any longer. He has not been in the place for over 6 months now since April! My wife ordered Sauerbraten which came with red cabbage and spetzel. The meat was dry with little to no gravy. Did not taste like Sauerbraten at all! Tasted more like pot roast than Sauerbraten. The spetzel was tasteless and obviously store bought and overcooked and broken into little pieces. The red cabbage was mushy and lacking in flavor. Very disappointing for $24.00. I had the “Huge Pork Shank”. $32.00 which came with two boiled tasteless potato balls & sauerkraut. There was no doubt it was huge however, it was more than 50% inedible fat. I also have never been to a German restaurant where they did not serve a wonderful black bread or Rye Bread. This place serves no bread at all! With dinner for two costing $56.00 w/o drinks or tip, one would think some bread and butter should be included!

First off, I write this review with sadness. Having lived on the island and dined here for 25 years, this place is no more. How many chances can you give a once wonderful now dreadful restaurant? If Gary and Armin still own this place, they should be ashamed and just close for good. I doubt there are anymore regulars that "dine" here. The very few thing that were edible here, have since been taken off the menue. It's a shame the once fantastic authentic German haven created by Wolfgang and Bridgette, has turned into this poorly cooked , cold food served dump. There are 3 more German restaurants in town , just go to one of those..

Okay where to start: I had the pork schnitzel with a mushroom sauce, well the schnitzel was all soggy and the mudroom sauce wasn't very nice either. My mum had the curryworst. Sausage and the curry sauce tasted like it was out of a jar. My dad had the original Schnitzel but even that came out all soggy with gravy on it. Have to say I am totally unimpressed as it cost far too much for the food we had.

We stopped by this little place and we were welcomed to the bar. We sampled authentic German beers and ordered schnitzel and it was all rather lovely, as if it was served in a German tavern. We really enjoyed it! Portions are enormous and the Apple strudel is fabulous. However be aware that this is one of the few places where you do need a reservation

We were so disappointed on our return visit to the Schnitzelhaus. We had been there several times under the previous ownership and the food was like home cooking. Not so much now. We ordered a potato pancake appetizer which was bready and heavy. Three of us ordered the jaeger schnitzel. The schnitzel was thin and overcooked. The mushroom gravy was not the pan gravy we remembered getting before and more liked canned gravy with canned mushrooms. The sauerbraten was the only hit of the table. To top it off, they were out of the Kostritzer beer that my husband so looked forward to getting. Maybe it was an off day, but sadly we won't be returning

We arrived a few minutes after the place opened. As we stood waiting we could see no one around to help us. We were then asked after 5 minutes to "sit there or there" very rude. The food is authentic, and very good, but the waitress seemed to not enjoy her job and made us feel very uncomfortable. We will not be back, William

The food here is fantastic! I was born in Austria and grew up with my Omi making delicious wiener schnitzel, goulashes and much more. Eating here bring me right back to her kitchen. Gary and the staff are great. Before our visit this year I called up and requested a special cheese spread my Omi used to make that was not on the menu and when we arrived they had made it for me. I was so excited! It was sooo good! Can’t wait till we visit again next year!

We have been here a couple times and the food was good. This time it was not! They no longer use their on line menu, but won’t take it down. I had sauerkraut, it was so bitter, just awful. The appetizer pretzels were literally drenched in salt. The potato salad tasted like Reeds , a canned grocery store version. Lastly, the Spätzle were bright yellow and had a strong, strangel taste. Don’t waste your money!

My wife and I stopped in for an early dinner, right as they opened at 4:30PM. We called an hour earlier for a reservation, but the place was nearly empty when we arrived on a weekday. We were immediately greeted warmly and made to feel at home. Excellent authentic German atmosphere, and the food was great! German beers on tap at the bar. Also a great place for families, small inside but comfortably cool with plenty of seating. We've been to the island multiple times but this was our first time at Old Hamburg - we will definitely be back!
