Laruni Hati is probably better as a lunch destination than dinner. Three of us who were staying nearby looked for it long and hard after dark, and finally saw a hand-lettered sign pointing toward the beach. It was down 100 yards or so, with few...lights visible and no customers whatsoever on the small patio.
But we plunged on, and went to the kitchen area to talk with the friendly proprietess, who was happy to serve us. Selecting from a menu right there, we placed our orders and went out to sit on the patio - rough benches around a set of four tables, with sand at our feet. Adornment? Fuggetaboudit.
When the food did come - and things are casual in Hopkins, meaning a half-hour wait isn't unusual - it was fine. My brother and his buddy had fried jacks - a bit like coarse turnovers - and stewed gibnut, which we later identified as paca, a big rodent - something like a large ground squirrel or marmot. Their verdict - pretty good, but greasy and a bit gamey. I had a blackened snapper that was fine but not exactly memorable.
Laruni Hati is a different experience for Americans, and clearly more Third World than most restaurants in Belize. That made it memorable, if difficult to truly recommend on the basis of either ambiance (definitely minimal) or cuisine.More
