HUHU Cafe offers visitors to Waitomo the opportunity to sample great New Zealand cuisine in a beautiful setting. We offer a delicious evening menu, perfect for enjoying with a cold one on the sunny deck after a hard day's caving or glow-worm spotting! You can enjoy delicious treats such as Caramelised Garlic & Goats Cheese Tart, Dark Chocolate Souffle & Poached Tamarillos to name but a few (please note that our menu changes on a regular basis, depending on what we can source from our suppliers). Wherever possible, we use local providers - our lamb comes from farms around Te Kuiti, our cheese from Putaruru & our berries (when in season) are from Piopio. Our wine list consists of a number of great New Zealand wine varieties and our beer list features a selection of boutique beers to whet the whistle! Cosy up by our woodburner during the winter months or chill out on our deck over summer... Have we tempted your tastebuds? Well then, we look forward to seeing you at HUHU sometime soon!

Best place to eat in Waitomo!

The selection of food here is excellent and all of a good quality. Staff are friendly and service was faultless. We shared a starter then had a main each, which was plenty of food for two and brilliant value. They also have a good selection of beers on tap which are served in actual pints (a rarity in NZ)! My boyfriend and I ate at about 3pm so it was relatively quiet. If you are passing through Waitomo then it is definitely worth timing it so that you can stop here for lunch or supper or if you are making a visit to the caves then would highly recommend getting food here afterwards. Gnocci was top notch!

Great meal if you're in Waitomo

We stopped by after our afternoon tour of the caves, for what ended up being a very late lunch/early dinner. The restaurant understandably at the time was otherwise empty. The food was excellent and well presented. Between us we had the bacon wrapped chicken, lamb curry and chips on the side, all well cooked. We ordered an apple and rhubarb crumble for dessert which was also enjoyable and well presented, however took an age to arrive despite an otherwise empty restaurant and was lacking a bit of that crunch you expect from the crust. All in all a good meal

Delicious, a little gem

Visited with my teenager on a trip to see the glow worms. This restaurant was a wonderful surprise. The food is modern and delicious, we had a pear and walnut salad, as well as delicious bacon wrapped chicken. The food quality is top notch, great value (for NZ) and they gave great service on the floor. Must visit if you're in the area.

Location: next to the caves. Food: we ordered a rissotto ball breaded, was good. The lamb was extremely tender, with lovely savor. The kid chicken was spicy and they inmeditely provided simple chicken with no extra charge. The snapper was delicious.

Great Food - Frosty Welcome

Our group of 8 did not make a prior booking as the town was extremely quiet due to the current virus situation. We arrived around 6pm and were rudely told how did we expect to turn up without a booking for 8. The waitress continued to be quite rude for our entire stay. On the positive side the food was sensational. If you are a small eater highly recommend only ordering an entree instead of a main. The entrees were quite big and a couple basically the same food just at a cheaper price. The desserts were also very good.

HUHU ticks like a perfectly timed clock

Book if you can to avoid any chance of missing out on a table at this popular spot. The cream cheese croquette is a lip smacker. Fettuccine a flavour bomb. Pork hock tender with sizzling flavours to satisfy all you’d hope for. The staff at HUHU are a well oiled machine, every detail is attended to quickly without making you feel hurried. Quite a skill when they are so popular. Every dish at every table is given the chefs full attention. Good on you HUHU. Thank You.

Best of Auckland quality at reasonable prices

We shared small plates and they obligingly increased the servings to suit our group of four. All the dishes were tasty and well presented and of generous quantity. We particularly liked the mini lamb burgers, pork bites which came with a delicious salad, mussel fritters, croquettes and risotto balls. Flavours were well balanced.

Brilliant Kiwi service!

Such a wonderful level Of service!! I have serious food allergies and the waitress did not roll her eyes once.. She took it all in her stride and put thought into each ingrediant of my dish and did a wonderful job relaying it to the chef. Although it still came out with a garnish of rocket after I had said no garnish at all, but hubby soon happily cleared that off the top of my dish. I had the pasta and hubby had the steak and potato skins. The meals were fabulous proportion sizes and so fresh! Highly recommend you stop for a bite here.

Couldn't have been more helpful

Our work team of 9 selected Waitomo for our end of year outing and were so pleased we had our lunch here. Our cave tours were a bit early and the cafe opened early just for us. We had pre-ordered our food and it was hot and tasty when it arrived within minutes of our arrival.

Great food and location

I went here with my husband and two children. We really enjoyed sharing a selection of small plates; pork bites, lamb, squid, rice balls, potato and Kumara skins. There was a great variety on offer and lots of gluten-free options. I wasn't a big fan of the chardonnay I bought by the glass and would have liked to see one or two other options. Would definitely recommend this cafe. Would be great for groups too.

Great food, great staff, will come again!

The cafe is located just across the lodge we're staying at. The owner of the lodge made the booking for our dinner and we went to the cafe slightly earlier than the booking time. The cafe allowed us in since the were not so many people around then. The food was exceptionally outstanding! And the food arrived pretty quick too, which is a nice surprise. Definitely will visit here again, keep up the amazing job guys!

What a treasure

What a treasure, this place is really worth a visit, the selection and choice of food was great, the service also great, and the tastiness of the food was also a pleasure. I had an entree of pork with a lovely crunchy slaw this suited me my partner had the entree of mini lamb burgers and a salad, which in the end beat him. There is plenty of food and the portions are truly a good size. We could not fit dessert in. I did have a coffee and that too was delicious . Worth the visit and the cost was reasonable.

The curried cauliflower salad and peanut parfait are delicious. The prices are quite high, no doubt reflecting their high freight charges and also the portions are large. We were a group of 4 and all enjoyed our meals. All the dishes were well presented and tasty. Staff were welcoming, the wine list had a good mix.

We were a group of 12 who enjoyed Huhu's hospitality after a tour with Spellbound caves so were ready to eat. We weren't disappointed. The whole group thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the desserts were divine. Food was well presented and tasty and the service friendly providing a nice atmosphere. Team Huhu thank you for an enjoyable afternoon.

Disappointing!

We booked this restaurant being so close to where we’re staying at the lodge across the road. Folk around us urged us to try the duck but we knew better ? Or did we ? My meal of lamb lacked colour and was dry. Very poor presentation and lacked taste. I should have added the mushrooms but the price of $35 for the lamb plus the cost of those would have been exorbitant. My wife was disappointed with her meal also. But to be fair the others at our table were very happy with their steak meals. Also the sticky date dessert we shared between two went some way to soothing this savage beast ! I must say I am not a fan of fine dining ... give me a Ready roast any time. In hindsight I should have ordered two small plates including one of the duck for the same total price and walked away happier. Hindsight is as usual a wonderful thing!
