The owner and staff are lovely, the food is proper pub grub, but definitely better than your average pub food! Cosy, old fashioned English pub in a central location to the town, with a variety of local ales on offer. Perfect place to spend a raining Northumberland evening!

We visited this pub whilst staying overnight in Haltwhistle. We were drawn by the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor but sadly our visit was nothing like the positive experience of other reviewers. My husband visited the pub earlier to check on the menu and serving times. We returned at 6pm to an already very busy bar with only one person serving... More

I love the food here; locally sourced, plenty of it and cooked to perfection. We just keep going back to get our fix! It's consistently excellent, spotlessly clean and the service is friendly and attentive. Best pub grub in the area.....by far.

Our Sunday lunch was really good. We had a roast and the plate came absolutely loaded with food. The meal was delicious and great value for money. The pub was cosy with real ambience and friendly people. We had a meal during the week, too and it was just as good. Really good home cooking and very generous serves.

Only went because it was 1 on tripadvisor! Really impressed. I really loved the ambiance, beams brass and a roaring fire. Food was great, I really like that local dishes are on the menu and they use local suppliers.

We were delighted to find this cosy pub open at 4.30pm and serving food at 5.30, having arrived early at our B&B and this being the only place in Haltwhistle serving food in the evenings out of season, apart from a rather expensive hotel and takeaways. The service was friendly and the goes beyond pub food. Portions are so generous... More

This is a lovely, cosy, friendly and welcoming pub. They were busy and we felt lucky to get a table in the bar room. We had to wait for food...no problem as they told us an hour and it actually came a little sooner. I had steak and wolf pie (amazing) and my other half had the trio of sausages.... More

Went to Haltwhistle for a four day break, a very very quiet small town! What a find this place is! Real fires, fantastic atmosphere, lovely staff and the best pint of beer ( golden plover) we've had in a long time! Don't even bother going in the sterile cold manor house inn! The black bull is awesome!

We ate and drank here on a Friday night and the quality was excellent. Service was prompt despite being busy. The 4 of us each had something different from the menu and everyone was happy with their order. Decent range of regional ales which were well kept and served properly. Popular with locals as well as tourists. Very friendly landlady... More
